I am reading up on the TSA rules for traveling with a firearm but I would be interested to know about anyone's experiences doing this at CLT, specifically flying American. My plan is to get a good case and put locks everywhere I can on the case, go through the process with the ticket agent and TSA, then put the case inside another checked bag. Thanks.

BTDT, easy as pie. I used the case it came in (Sig P938) with little padlocks. Lock it enough that you can't pry it open a finger-width.

Don't look for your bag on the belt on the far side, they take it over to the baggage office so they can make sure it's yours.

It's super easy. Just follow the TSA rules.  The TSA agent I dealt with in Charlotte was super cool. I flew back to NC out of a super small airport in NY, there was no TSA there so the airline checked it and it was no big deal to them.  I also stuck my ZT and Spyderco knives in with my pistol so I knew they'd be safe and I have them with me on my trip.
