Sorry if this gets asked a lot.

Is it legal to have a firearm in my vehicle on a Navajo Reservation (Antelope Canyon)?

Thanks for any replies.

"Navajo Tribal Code Title 17, Section 1451, prohibits the use of firearms. No firearms allowed on tribal lands."

No. Don't do it. They absolutely don't fuck around on the reservation when comes to laws being broken.

I'd read up and do what they want done to bring your gun on their land.

Thanks for that.  I searched for the above and found this https://www.navajonationcouncil.org/code/

I was not able to find a "Section 1451" under Title 17, but I did find the following in Title 17:

§ 320. Unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon
A. Offense. A person commits unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon if he
or she carries a loaded firearm or any other type of deadly weapon.
B. Exceptions. Subsection (A) of this Section shall not apply to any of
the following:
1. To peace officers in the lawful discharge of their duties;
2. To persons in a private motor vehicle or other means of
conveyance, for lawful protection of the person's or another's person or
property, while traveling and such weapon is located in a closed trunk,
luggage, or glove compartment of a motor vehicle
;

It would appear from that that it can be secured in a trunk, luggage, or glove compartment.  Not sure if my interpretation is correct, though.

Maybe the "while traveling" part means I can't stop.

If it's locked in your trunk, it's fine. It's the pistol under the seat they're gonna care about.

I've been to Antelope Point, don't stand out, you'll be fine.

A firearm locked in your trunk will be of no help in the event you need it in an emergency . I avoid the res whenever possible. If they refuse to allow me my 2nd amendment rights ,I refuse to support them with my dollars. If enough people did the same ,they would  change ,and allow visitors to be armed. Nothing speaks louder than $$$$$$$$$$$$.

This is really one of those things where if you're in doubt, either don't do it or don't go.  As someone else said, they do not fuck around up there.

As an added bonus you go to tribal court. You're probably better off breaking the law in Mexico than on the rez.

You'll most likely never get your gun back, at a minimum.

Antelope Canyon is a big tourist trap, presuming you are traveling up Hwy 89 through the town of Page you will barely be over the line.
So long as you arent being a jackass the Tribal Police arent going to hassle you as it is one of the few income sources for that area.

Leave it in your car, make sure you obey all traffic laws while on the Rez and you will be fine.

I seem to remember someone posting that Rez firearm restrictions do not apply to State Highways. I will see if I can find it.

I would love to see that. A good friend was a rez cop for many years and used to bust people all the time regardless of what road they were on. That was a very specific point of conversation at one point. He made sure to let me know the highways were not protected places. He worked Salt River though so it may be different on the Navajo.

I think if I'm reading it right, I can keep it secured in the vehicle while I'm there.  That's a big "if", though, especially if the local authorities don't know or don't care what the actual regulation is.

I'd be fine with skipping that leg of the trip entirely, but I'll be with family that wants to go.

Just leave it in the car. I take stuff up there all the time, never a problem if I don't let 'em know it's there.

My understanding was that in your vehicle on State Route 89 you are good, but you pull off the highway and into chevron and not so much.
That being said rules up there are kind of in a grey zone, so who knows.

It cool to see, but the swarms of tourist are kind of a buzz kill.

Very very true. They have a lot of policies that they use their own discretion on. My ex's dad was out dove hunting and crossed over and got caught and they took his guns and equipment and never gave it back. Said he had to file through the tribal court to get a hearing and they made him jump through so many hoops, it wasnt worth the time. I never hang out on the rez nor even get fuel when I travel through. I feel like like im in Mexico or something every time I am there.

Look at how they live and run things on the res, it's strange to say the least. If you go there you are subject to their laws . It is very clear they do not want us there ,they only want our money $$$$$. They have no problem taking our money at their casinos that they have a monopoly on .  IMHO they they think we the paleface took their land and they don't trust us.
Since the beginning of time on earth ,the land belongs to whoever is strong enough to take and hold it. They have a damn good deal here in America and Arizona ,they own the land in perpetuity  and are immune from state taxation  .

My understanding is that pertains to traveling through the reservation. When I go from Cochise county to Show Low area I’m packing plus loaded rifles. I don’t stop on the res though.
