By chance. Actively tracking with dogs doesn't count.

I’ve seen a few, twice while Deer hunting and once while completely dark on my quad.

Last was really interesting, big girl, had to call the fellow that owned the ranch that his livestock was probably being targeted.

Culled her as a livestock danger (or whatever it’s called) and got a really nice pelt out of it.

A few times for me over the
years during deer season.

Once in the early 70's. My sister and I were coyote calling, my sister brought in a huge Tom.

She took him with her 22-250

Took me 18 years to see my first one, saw the second one 3 weeks later. Haven't seen another in 23 years.

A few times, far north valley.

This video (not mine, I'm not that crazy) was taken about a month ago. As you can see it's a reasonably developed area.

I used to work in the North Scottsdale, Northsight and Raintree area. One night closing up shop, I walked outside and was greeted by an adult mountain lion about 15 feet away. He was using the water drainage washes coming out of the golf course neighborhoods to move around town and hunt all the rabbits/small dogs in the area.

He had a radio collar on, I called AZGFD to report it, and the lady straight up did not believe me. She said it must have been a dog. I told her I know the difference between a dog and a 180lb cat.

About 8 years ago. It was also near midnight, but I wouldn't expect to see them during the day light. It was a fat cat, so I guess the local rabbit population was under control. I’ve seen coyote recently in the same area...those golf course communities are prime hunting grounds.

A few.

North Scottsdale, creeping through a front yard. One near Heber.

I glassed this guy up near Tucson chasing does about 10 years ago.

At least three times.  Once in the Huachucas during the Monument Fire.  This huge cat was running from the flames just like we were.  Then twice when I was working in Aj, AZ.  Both times I saw another big one crossing the highway headed toward the horse stables at the Indian High School near Why, AZ. I will never drive on that road unarmed.

Six times this year alone. I can't count how many times now but all over AZ from southern 36ABC to 22 and 23.

I've seen one in the Canelo Hills, less than 100 yards. One in the Chiricahuas. at around 250 yards. I heard another in the Santa Rita's but never saw it.

All three instances were the only times I didn't have a lion tag. Every other hunt I've had one, for almost 40 years.

What are the rules on shooting them (in SD of course)?

Can you give me a general idea of the location?

Yes, More than once. First time I was a kid out on a group camping trip, maybe third grade. Taking a dump against a tree, and finished up and notice something out of the corner of my eye, just a tiny flash up the mountain. Finished up, ran down the hill, to the parent who was escorting me, and the thing was stalking me. Wouldnt give up either, had to fire some .357 magnums at it to make it go away.

Then once when I was bow hunting, busted a mother with 2 medium size cubs. I think we both were stalking the same Javelina pack. Saw the mother, she looked pissed, saw the 2 butt ends of the cubs go into a bush, and like magic they were gone! Just straight gone...

23 hunting seasons lots of camping and hiking, never seen one.

me and a buddy were hunting down south 34A I think, we hiked to a narrow ridge and sat him facing east, me facing west maybe 20yds apart too far to talk, each overlooking the small valleys to either side of our ridge. I saw 3 does, he saw, way off, a mountain lion.

Near Mayer, back in 2000 in the late afternoon.
Just standing in the middle of a very not busy roadway to the east of town,,, no other traffic the entire time.
I had another Cop in the car with me. First time either of us had seen one in the wild.
I stopped about 50 yards from it, and we just watched it for about 3 minutes, and then it walked away.

Been out and about a ton in the Southwest, and I've only heard one. That was in northern New Mexico. We found its tracks and it was pretty clear it was taking an interest in our group.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen one in the wild yet. I've been all over the state in all fashions from 4x4 to snow shoes. I use to explore the woods surrounding the area around Flagstaff regularly. One day while hiking in the area of Mars Hill, all long FR 506, I saw fresh mountain lion sign. I beat feet out of there.

The only wild one I saw was dead in the back of my buddies Suburban.  He shot it while we were out deer hunting in 36C.

I'm surprised I've never glassed one up.  I do a ton of glassing while deer hunting and even go out glassing outside of deer season trying to find one.

I've always got my tag just in case.  One of these days I know I'm going to glass one up in 33.

Two times in the Hualapai Mountains in Kingman. Both times were on the road. One night I saw one dart across the road and lay low just off the side as I approached. I came to a full stop with it hunched down hiding about ten feet away. It was staring at me with its ears back and finally ran up the side of the embankment after it realized I could see it.

I’d estimate it was about a 100 pound female.

The second I saw dart across the road and keep trucking.

In various thermal scopes, at night, lots and lots of times, all some distance away, doing things cats do at night.

Then, three nights ago, a mom and kit crossed the highway in front of me and damn near got hit.

Never seen one in the flesh until that moment, and then, I saw two!

twice, 1st one about 15 years ago one ran across I17 in front of me just south of Cordes Junction. I clipped it with the front passenger fender and it tore up the inner wheel arch on my civic. it was about 1/2 hour before dawn and I never did find it.
2nd time was camping at my place near Seligman about 9 years ago. one looked at me from across the campfire, probably no more than 25 yards away. I've seen a lot of tracks up there over the years.

This surprisingly.
I spent an awful lot of time in TNF without seeing any.
A lot of other critters but no Mountain Lions.

I saw one in CA where the burbs meet Angeles National Forest.

Still no Gila Monster either..

Near crown king up towards where tower mountain meets gladiator. At least 4 times, once too close for comfort. Normally they leave us alone but a cub must have been near as it was getting aggressive.

If you like deer, antelope, bighorn sheep and elk, then every cat you see should be a dead cat. No shortage of predators in this state. Quite the opposite actually.
