Thinking about coming back from the Grand Canyon up through Durango. Is it a good place to stay the night with the family? Any areas to avoid? Things for a family to see on the way back to Colorado Springs?

Thanks guys

If it's not too late for an answer.  I go to Durango a lot.

Durango is great. A few homeless/beggars, but generally very safe.  Very outdoorsy.  Slightly hippy-ish.

What to do:
- Mesa Verde is 40 minutes away
- Hiking all over the place
- Fly or spin-cast fish the Animas - just about anywhere near town is great
- Ska Brewery is great - even kid friendly
- I like the beer at Animas brewing a bit better and it has a nice restaurant and friendly people
- Serious texas BBQ is good - two locations
- ride the steam train!
- walk along the river or downtown - plenty of shops and such
- it's a mountain biking mecca and some pros live there
- watch out for bears - I see them fairly often in town at dusk
- Old Tymer bar for a burger

I just realized that many of my recommendations include beer.  Ooops.
