I've never been on either side of doing it, but there's a process where they can do a one-time check with (I think) the PD in lieu of having a purchase/carry permit. No idea how long it takes, but it should at least be faster than waiting for your paper in the mail.

I just went over to the gun shop to check it out and make sure it was as advertised. Damn, is it nice. Might be my new favorite pistol. This is gonna be a long 2 weeks.

Very nice pistol. If it weren't for the Twin Cities MN would have even better gun laws. As it stands we aren't awful but a lot of progress still needs to be made.
