That's devastating.

Sorry to hear that, it's terrible.

I had my entire household goods stolen in a u-haul truck when I was newly married to my first wife. I'd never heard of renter's insurance. OP, good on you for telling them about it.

Some life lessons are very painful. Hopefully they'll get the help they need. Losing the dogs is especially painful.

That's devastating to anyone let alone people on limited/fixed income.

I had renter's insurance for years while in the military and renting... it's really not expensive at all... and certainly worth it when something like this happens.

I looked up to see if a landlord could just include it and it's a no. I suspect the insurance industry has a hand in that. It would be nice to just include it in the rent and it would likely drive cost down.

Too much room for fraud there. It would be a legal nightmare.

You can require it as a condition of the lease.  Every place I've ever rented required liability at a minimum.

Bummer, man. My sympathies to the little girls, especially. Tough situation.

On a lighter note, I recall another fire on that property a few years ago - started by a hand-cranked 8mmR IIRC.

IANAL but it's a thing.  These were big apartment complexes in midtown ATL.
