Taking the family camping this weekend.  I usually avoid camping on Holiday weekends, but this is the only weekend we can do it so...

Usually for a quick camp trip we go up on the rim near Tonto Creek / Young road.. but being a holiday weekend, I'm looking elsewhere that will hopefully be a little less crowded.

So, I am thinking of going up north of Pine / Strawberry.

Are there any good camp spots on top between Pine / Strawberry and Clints Well?

We don't need much, just a nice place in the Pines hopefully away from traffic.  If there is a stream nearby for the kids, that's a huge plus.

If not, I might just go up towards Happy Jack (6A/5A/5B area) and camp there.  Just trying to stay a LITTLE bit closer.

I camp that area often.

Google Poverty Draw. It's off fire road 147E from the 87 about 20-30 minutes past Strawberry. I have camped the area a dozen times in the last few years and only on a few occasions have I seen anyone else. It's the only place we camp on Holiday weekends to avoid crowds.

Drive up near Clints Well and Happy Jack, pick a road, and find a site. Being a holiday weekend, I'd probably stay away from FR300.

What he said.  Most people don't dry/primitive camp.

Use Google maps to find a remote road up on the rim, drive up it and camp.

Milk Ranch Point is right above strawberry   34.416005, -111.411570  I've been up there, but you get on the 300 road and it goes 30 miles to the next paved road and there's a bazillion places to pull off and camp and little roads etc... have fun

Thanks.  That Poverty Draw looks good, I might check that out.  Otherwise, I'll just find a place to pull off and camp

I'm chancing it at our place with a new lady friend in forest lakes. I DESPISE going up there on holiday weekends, but that's when she could go. With hunting season starting, it's pretty much going to be packed up there until November.

I miss having a schedule where I could zip up there mid week and not deal with the crowds.

Is that creek/pond stocked? Looks like a fun place to flyfish.

That looks like a cool area. I'll have to go check it out so you keep your spots secret. I Usually stay on 260 east, but I'd like to get up there and explore around strawberry.

If you guys see a bald guy rolling around on a krylon tan honda, throw something at me.

Next time I'm up that way, I'll have tallboy with yer name on it. At least you'll be able to feel a bit better about the knot on yer noggin with a foamy beer.

We're headed out in the morning (daughter had to work tonight). Going to give that Poverty Draw place a chance.

If you are in the area and see a camp with a Silver Tundra and a Silver Sequoia, that's us!

Well, we went up to the Poverty Draw area.  Found a nice place to camp and the next day found a nice little stream with a pool in it.  Kids loved it, but froze their butts off... Wife said this is our new camping spot....
