Good news the Sequim and Bow stores.
SEATTLE — A burglar involved in two gun store heists pleaded guilty to federal charges Tuesday morning after he was caught on surveillance video using stolen heavy trucks to rob the businesses.
United States Attorney Brian T. Moran said Joey A. Maillet, 39, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of firearms from a federal firearms license.
Investigators identified Maillet as the suspect in a April 13, 2019 burglar of Fred's Guns in Sequim, Clallam County and in a May 3, 2019 burglary of All American Armory in Bow, Skagit County. Forensic evidence, including blood and fingerprints and surveillance video linked Maillet to the crimes according to court records.
Authorities said Maillet used a backhoe, a type of excavating equipment, to ram the doors of Fred's Guns and broke glass display cases to steal 26 firearms. In the process Maillet cut his arm on the glass case, leaving evidence at the scene.
“He wanted to hop over to get behind the cabinet but fell through the glass,” said Seth Larson, the owner of Fred's Guns. “And that’s how he cut himself. And that’s how we got his DNA. There was blood everywhere.”
More than three weeks later surveillance video showed Maillet use a stolen pick-up truck to back into the doors of the All American Army. He was suspected of using a stolen garbage can from a neighboring post office to load 13 rifles from the store and driving away in a stolen pick-up truck.
Investigators found the stolen pick-up truck abandoned in Birch Bay State Park in Whatcom County, Washington. Shattered glass was in the truck bed and there was a stolen boat motor and battery. The truck was reported stolen from an agricultural operation not far from the Bow gun store while the boat motor and battery were reported stolen by a resident of Ferndale, Washington according to authorities.
A Ferndale Police Officer found Maillet May 10, 2019 -- exactly one week after the second burglary -- and arrested him on an outstanding warrant for a burglary in Everett, Washington. Officials said a search warrant revealed items in Maillet's backpack linked him to thefts at the Bow gun store and video from the boat motor and battery theft "clearly" showed Maillet was the thief.
