We had a nice one living around the residence before the bear season opened last year. He (she) ran across the road about 25 yards in front of me when I was out for my walk. Had me going for my pistol. LOL. On opening day, I heard about 4-5 gunshots down behind the house. Haven't seen it since. Of course, the bears will be in hibernation once the foliage dies out. I did glimpse one at about 100 yards distance in Jocassee Gorges just before sunrise during bear season the third week of October. DNR estimates about 1000 to 1200 in the northwestern parts of the state.

There has been one on the Bombing Range in Sumter and the weapons station in Charleston has had them for years.
They aren’t common in mid and lower counties but they are around. |

In addition to the upstate, there are a bunch of bears in Horry and Georgetown. When Hwy. 22 and Hwy. 31 were built, there were quite a few car vs bear collisions. The area west of the ICS is full of them.

Andrews, SC. Found some of our bees destroyed. Checked trail cams, and found the likely culprit.

Saw one dead on the side of HWY 17 in Brunswick County NC early in the morning (about 10 miles from SC). It was skinny as hell.

I am getting into hiking starting with doing Midlands sections of the Palmetto Trail. I'm more concerned with Elmer Fudds who blast first, ID second than I am with bears.

It's early for bears to be out, although the really warm days could have woke some up. Do you low state guys have any green vegetation coming in yet? There's none up here, so any early bears will hurt for food.

I was driving north on 601 headed toward 378 and just past the entrance to the paper mill there was a giant animal carcass by the side of the road. Covered in what appeared to be black fur but badly decomposed. It was likely a wild boar but I suppose that there's a slim chance it could have been a bear. It didn't stop to see.

I've come across them several times while hiking/backpacking and when I worked up on Jocassee (back in the '80s), never worried about them other than being inquisitive at campsites but I keep a clean campsite. I still carry a S&W 642 as my primary hiking/backpacking gun. We've got them on the game cams at my buddy's place in Union County, my neighbor has them on camera down at his family place around Santee, my brother has them on his cameras in Greenville County, etc. I don't see any point in hunting them and wouldn't shoot one unless I absolutely had to for some reason. I've tried bear cooked a couple of different ways and didn't care for it.

The bears in the low country tend to be huge because they don’t hibernate in the winter. The largest black bears in the country live in eastern North Carolina.
