Hi guys,
Any insights into the apartment market in town? My Daughter just graduated from The OSU and she is planning to stay in Ohio for at least a year. She likes her current Job, she also has some continuing work requirements before she can take her certification exam. Her current lease is up in July, she would like to get away from the campus without going to far. Any unsafe neighborhoods to watch out for? Any good spots that might not pop out in a Google search? Thanks! |

Mostly young professionals in there...c Eta, pretty much every place thats not a shithole is gonna run 1100ish a month per one bedroom...... |

Between $800 and $900 for a 1 BR. Very nice units and close to just about everything in NW Columbus.
Sawmill Crossing |

View Quote I lived up north of 270 & sawmill for 2 years, then off Hard & Sawmill for a year with my wife. Most apartments up there are pretty nice. I think @BENLPN is right though, all the decent places are aren't going to be cheap. |

The places she has sent links for are all within a couple miles of campus and $680 - $800 per month.
I know that she doesn't want to be to far from her current job and the school resources that she needs to finish her certification. Plus I think that she is still riding at the equestrian center. Thanks guys |

Living inside 270 can be dicey, especially if it’s somewhat close to tOSU. Downtown is stupidly expensive, Clintonville can be deceiving, and going east of I-71 is absolutely a hell no. I’d say the folks who’ve responded here would be good resources if you wanted to tell someone where your daughter was looking?
Also, check with CPD and see if you can find crime stats for the area. May help her decide. http://www.columbuspolice.org/reports/Maps/City |

Thanks guys View Quote @Lost-Drive-In Has she looked at the housing north of campus? You tend to get an older crowd up there (grad students, dental, etc). I lived up there my senior year at OSU and it was a marked difference from living off high near campus. This would also give her decent access to OSU for anything she needs. Only catch is parking sucks. |
|
I lived quite affordably in the Harrison West/Victorian Village area for a while. Very close to campus and a population mostly of younger working people.
Convenient to 670/71/315 or up Neil Ave. to OSU. |

Inside 270 either means downright unsafe but affordable, or mostly safe but downright unaffordable. Anything priced inbetween really isn't safe, or has some stupid downside like no parking. There are tiny pockets of affordable houses in good neighborhoods but not really apartments, and you would really have to know the area to find those. A good realtor may be able to help if she is hellbent on staying in the city, but her best bet would be outside 270 and just deal with traffic. There are nice apartments just off 161 between 270 and New Albany, makes for a reasonable commute into the city. |

She is a sensible young lady but I worry that her 4 years at school my have given her a false sense of safety in the city. Her apartment with a room mate was just off Lane Avenue. She did additional coursework at Columbus State (the program she is still finishing up) so she wasn't on campus the whole time, but her friends were all from school and work.
I figured I should at least ask here if she was venturing away from the campus area. I was fresh off the farm when I lived in North Philadelphia and I had some conflicts before I figured out rough city living. It could go a lot worse for a small girl. She has been trying to be financially independent, so she's trying not to spend to much. A few that she sent me - https://www.apartments.com/raccoon-creek-apartments-columbus-oh/men97pj/#reviewsSection https://www.apartments.com/riverview-square-columbus-oh/79x8gfy/ https://www.apartments.com/clifton-woods-columbus-oh/xjkn2bp/ https://www.apartments.com/columbus-park-apartments-columbus-oh/bqv768b/ So - Riverbend - Close to the police station. Is that a drag strip? Looked like a nice enough area on the Internet. Just North of Campus. We have stayed at the Red Roof Inn nearby - seemed pretty quiet. East Columbus - Looked sketchy to me Southeast Columbus - Looks industrial. Thanks Guys! |

I lived off of Lazelle rd up neat Polaris for a year. It is nice and close to everything you need to get too.
It was Summer View Apartments in a 1 bedroom flat. It was over 10 years ago though. They also have garage spaces available for extra storage. |

Prolly not gonna get murdered, get the right apartments andmay be ok. East Columbus - Looked sketchy to me fuck no Southeast Columbus - Looks industrial. still pretty close to fuck no territory Thanks Guys! View Quote Added to the above with the idea its my sister or daughter is moving in solo... Im beating a dead horse here, but i cannot stress this enough for the central/campus Columbus area. You have to pay $$$ for security 100% no questikns asked especially being a solo young female... please try to talk her into a more $$ place outside the campus/central area, trust me its worth the additional ramen noodles a month and less Starbucks (profiling a young girl here lol). I did what she did initially and regretted it. Obviously she has to learn some life and demographic lessons starting out about selecting a residence, but its worth a shot. |

Of those four, Riverview is the best bet, however that isn’t saying much at all. It’s well off the beaten path and there are is a larger population of Hispanics and other foreigners living there. The other three are a resounding HELL NO. I’m pretending we’re talking about my daughter, and there’s no way I’d allow the other three.
Just trying to be helpful. Does she have her CCW? |

East Columbus - Looked sketchy to me Southeast Columbus - Looks industrial. Thanks Guys! View Quote First link, Raccoon Creek - if you look at the map, just barely north of that is The Hilltop. This is by far the worst section of Columbus. Hardest no possible on that. Riverview Square - dunno on that one. Clifton Woods - Looks to be between Bexley and downtown. Bexley is one of the few good parts inside of 270, so that could go either way. Funny thing about Bexley - to the East is Whitehall, one of the worst areas inside of 270, and they are separated by one traffic light. I do know that slightly north of this one, right along 670 and to the north it gets pretty bad, just a few blocks away. Columbus Park apartments - South Columbus is mostly industrial. None of the residential in south Columbus is going to be a good area. TL:DR Hell no on Raccoon Creek and Columbus Park, probably hell no on Clifton Woods (talk a drive through the neighborhood, couple blocks in every direction and trust your gut). Riverview is a maybe. |

Copperhead has the right idea. Unfortunately the “you get what you pay for” adage really applies to safe apartment locations.

|
One more suggestion Arena crossing
Really nice, great views literally next door to the area, mad amounts of nightlife with her age range, super safe and easy access to all roads. Campus is 5 minutes north and tuns of cota stops if she uses that... |
|
All I can add is stay out of the Columbus area, getting worse by the day, I am in Hilliard, plenty of apartments to be had, but they seem to fetch a pretty penny.
|
|
@BENLPN @copperhead035 got it right. Of those places I'd avoid all of them. Riverview Sq. is probably the least terrible.
Clifton woods is a roll of the dice like copperhead said. You can go from one block at $700k houses to almost slums the next. I wouldn't want my wife to live her if she was young and single. You might want to have her look into some apartments in Grandview. Pricier? yes. Safer? yes. You also get more families & professionals down there. Plus DK Diner for donuts. |

Others are welcome to chime in, but I think those should all be in pretty good areas. I tried to get a few in downtown Columbus in some of the better pockets like Short North, then spread out towards Dublin and Gahanna. I didn't really see anything in Upper Arlington or Worthington like I'd hoped, but I'm not terribly surprised. View Quote Good ideas there, thanks! |

Lots of young professionals and graduate students. The area is called Harrison West/Victorian Village. Could even look around Goodale Park, but it can be more expensive as you get closer to the park. |
