The Department of External Affairs is a multifunctional professional office based at Winants Hall on Rutgers’ flagship Association for American Universities (AAU) campus in New Brunswick. Responsible for advocating on the University’s behalf with elected and other government policymakers in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., the department also oversees the entirety of Rutgers’ marketing efforts; engages the media; provides creative, web, and editorial services; positions and enhances the Rutgers University brand; and, through the use of social media, interacts with the world. The department supports the entire University system in these essential efforts.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Senior Director of External Affairs for the Rutgers Gun Safety Project. This position reports to the Senior Vice President for External Affairs and the Chief of Staff at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. The Senior Director of External Affairs for the Rutgers Gun Safety Project is responsible for the management of external affairs as it relates to the study of gun violence in New Jersey. This position is also responsible for the planning and implementation of events and initiatives to engage and educate policy-makers in and about Rutgers and its role related to the study of gun violence and other matters.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Develops and executes communications plans and collaborates with other departments to ensure the broadest distribution of information to the most appropriate audiences.Responsible for all media inquiries, promotional outreach and issues and crisis communications for the Center. Collaborates with other professionals to develop appropriate responses to questions and inquiries regarding the Center.Responsible for developing and distributing digital and print communications materials for the Center.Maintains close working relationships with policy-makers and other key stakeholders to ensure proper exposure of the Center’s work.Responsible for securing the funding needed to implement the on-going priorities of the Center and Study of Gun Violence at Rutgers. This includes, but is not limited to developing relationships with key stakeholders that fund the Center and seek additional funding for the Center’s priorities.Provides insights on NJ state policy-related matters.Collaborates with University faculty, staff, students and administrators, including members of the Administrative Council to identify opportunities to promote key initiatives related to the study of gun violence and other matters through planned events and outreach.Provides valuable insights and analysis on proposed legislation.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a master’s degree in political science, government affairs or related field.A minimum of 10 years of experience working with the New Jersey legislative or executive branches.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with professionals at all levels in an organization and be able to successfully advocate for key initiativesMust be well-organized and a persuasive communicatorExperience developing print materials and utilizing digital communications methods including social media and websites
