It's that time of year again and I'm getting pretty anxious for the season to start.

Lets see some deer pictures and other hunting/fishing for this year.

Here are a few of mine: a nice 4pt (from the looks of the bases, he'll be a monster in a few years), two little 7pts, a little 8pt, and a decent 8pt - who may or may not be a target deer this year.

Target Deer:

Nice 8pt - I'm hoping he makes it another year:

Two 7pt - they'll be nice in a few years

Nice young 4pt - He looks like he'll be a nice buck in a few years

I smacked two geese yesterday. Its all locals so far.

I haven't got my deer feeder up or my camera out yet. I need to do that. I got my 450 bushmaster sighted in a month ago (been sitting in the safe newly assembled for a year). I also need to get my crossbow tuned up.

Cams are up and running. Blinds and ladder stands are up... Now we wait... 86 for the high on the 28th...

Looks to be a hot fall....

They are predicting a late rut. Mid Nov  anyone have thoughts on that ?

Not bad for only being up less than a week. Hopefully this gets something bigger to come in.

One tag filled

was only about 20 yards from the stand... I took the head shot...went straight down but had to finish her off. no suffering on my hunts.

And just heads up when I checked the deer via phone... and it may happen to you  I only got a 6 digit conformation code... the guy at the butcher called the game warden and tried to get an answer but he did not answer his phone.  I got the text message from ODNR with the same number.. checked on line when I got home ... same number...

Just heard ODNR talk about this on an Ohio hunting Podcast.   If you don't want to listen moral of the story is they tried to encode all kinds of data into the 18 digit code but realized it was to hard to write down and transcribe.  The below quote is from an email they sent to the podcast to make sure everything was communicated correctly the link is to the podcast which includes the text from the email with more information about the tagging/ check process.  The podcast has some more info about the season and changes to regs made this year if anybody wants to listen.

"The confirmation number has been shortened to a 6-character code.  Letters and numbers are used in the code, the last 2 digits will always be the season year."

Ohio Huntsman Podcast episode 60

PS.  Sorry I don't have any hunting pics I had a kid the night before the opener so still trying to make it out.  Hoping to get out on some nearby public this week.

Not Ohio, but I am hunting, well, was.

WV archery season.  They finally started allowing crossbows a year or two ago.  I don't have one but my 15 year old compound still works.

I stopped out to my friends property that I have permission to hunt on to see if there was any action before sundown. Roughly 90 yards away, which is the closest I could sneak up on them withou trying to creep up along the neighboring corn field.

Only one of them was decent enough for the taking. Now I've gotta decide if I still want to wait for gun season or basically guarantee I get one now with a bow...

One of the biggest bucks I have ever seen in person was in Parma.  Walking down the sidewalk on state road.....

I put 30 rounds through 3 different 350 legends.  I could have done 10 more rifles if it wasn't so cold.  Far less recoil than the 450bm.

Yepper Its not even close to the 450B Far far less recoil... I predict the 450 will go to the back of the safe very soon

For the most part I am a bird hunter.. I only hunt deer for food ... I shoot what close and big enough... Other than that you can find me out with the dogs in the high grass.

This one little Brit brought up all these birds... She's the best pooch I have ever had...

Yea, we were pretty much committed to 450 Bushmaster when the 350 Legend came out.

I think the Legend would be a much better choice if starting from scratch.

The Britt above is 8 now and has been one hell of a dog.. shes slowing down a bit but still kicking the brush hard. all the birds above were from Cherry Bend near willmington oh..

I hunt all over.. mainly south east were the wild bird populations are still doing ok... Deer creek is one but you better have a good dog very thick...

Mostly down by aimsville ohio (relatives live down there)

I've spent the last 4 weekends in a blind on a property outside of Coshocton that last year yielded two deer in a grand total of about 40 minutes of hunt time.  Plenty of sign, but looks like the deer are only moving in the middle of the night.  Getting a little antsy!

Only grouse in Ohio is way southeast... and into WV and KY if you like quail you will need to go into northern KY for that....   as for grouse.. they are very fast and will wait until last minute to fly..

If you want a dog that is a  pet as well as hunter.. get a Brittany... She is a lover and hunter.. Easy to care for and will be loyal to the end
