What features?  Carry gun, range toy, bullseye, IDPA, IPSC?

Well this is very subjective but for me it's the Kimber TLE ii series. Front strap checkering and nights sights for a great price.

I have 9mm and .45 apc 1911’s   That said, I think a 1911 should be in .45.

What the poster above you said.

Colt and Springfield both have various models in that price range, all depends on features you want.

I would say Ruger and Springfield. Mine are flawless.

My Ruger 5" might be the best 1911 I have ever owned.

What are the new Dan Wessons going for? $1,500?  Or are they getting closer to the $1000 mark?

RIA - all day long.
Good gun, great price. Spend the rest on ammo

Many options. I’ve never spent over about 6-7 hundred for one.
First 3 choices would be:
Magnum Research shoots better than it should for the cost
Ruger commander is very light and handy.
Colt used.

My vote would be the SR1911 (ruger) as well.  Of the 2,500 rounds of .45 ACP I have through mine, it’s been flawless for the last 1,500 since I tuned the extractor around the 1,000 round count.  I actually learned how to tune it from a simple YouTube video done by Larry Vickers. Of course if you need a rail I suppose Dan Wesson Specialist or Colt Rail Gun.

I have a RIA 9mm and had a .45 which I gifted to a family member and both are great choices.

I have had several Colts (loved the Defender that I traded), have a couple Taurus 1911s (ambidextrous safety broke on the .45 so I replaced it with a Wilson single side), and have a Springfield .45. I didn’t really care for the Para 1911’s.

For the price and dependability it’s hard to beat the RIA. Too bad that they don’t offer a stainless 1911.

Not sure what "best" means to you but given a 1k budget, my first stop would be Colt.  These days Colt is killing it, and their 1911's are very good.  At that price point you're really not paying much extra for the little pony on the side.  When you compare them to other pistols at a similar price, to my eye, the Colt is every bit as good, an aesthetically shows more attention to detail.

I’d say the Colt competition. NM barrel, upgraded sights, beavertail, extended thumb safety, and VZ grips all on one of the most reliable 1911s made.

If you shop around you may find a DW Valor for around $1100 and this would be my choice. I snagged an unfired one for $1300 not long ago and I’ve seen two on other sites for $1100

what about a dan wesson vigil?

I see quite a few recommendations for the ruger its definitely on the list.

I like the springfields but I keep hearing of glued in extractors?

I think the DW A2 retails for around $1,300, and the Vigil for slightly less. You should be able to find one for just over that budget, maybe $1,100 and change? I have never handled a Vigil or an A2, but, I can say that my Specialist will smoke anything else in its price range in the fit and finish department.

I’m not a DW fanboy like half of this sub forum, but the Vigil is a great pistol and I really like the features they set it up with.

You won’t find a new one under a grand unless you want the commander or CCO. I see the 5” models around $1070.

Just be aware if you ever want to sell it, it will depreciate a bit more than a Colt, and possibly even more than a Springfield.

After 25 years experience owning 1911 pistols i say purchase a used higher end 1911 over any new low end 1911.   For me high end begins with Dan Wesson Valor or a Les Baer, etc.  If i could start over today i would have saved my lunch money for a few more years (yes years) and bought the Ed Brown or Wilson i wanted all along. But to each their own.

You read my mind :-)

Buying cheaper is cool if you want / have to tinker or if you don't have elaborate needs. But if you really want all the bells and whistles and a finely crafted pistol, by the time you add all of the doodads and customizing of a lesser gun you wind up with an expensive piece.

I have had my DW Vigil commander for almost a year now and I love it.  I picked it up from Cabela's with a blem for just under a 1000+ fee's.  Albeit 9mm it's my daily carry, and a test I have ran for awhile now.  I get home pull the gun and fire 11 rounds, 10 round mag+1.  Rinse repeat the next day, the thing has not failed me.   So I am confident if I ever need it, it should be good to go.    No it's not a .45 but I really like the 1911 9mm platform.

1991 are not 70series. They are 80. The 1911c (Classic) and the 1970a1cs model it replaced are 70series.

I just ordered a Colt Competition Series 70 Two Tone. It has all of the features that I'm looking for without too many frills like ambi safeties etc. Only thing I don't like is the fiber optic front sight.

https://lockedloaded.com/product/colt-o1070ccstt-compet-gvrnmnt-45-5in-2tn

I know arfcom doesn't like two tone 1911's but I always liked the look: blued slide on a stainless frame looks 80's sheek and reminds me of the gun used by Arnold in Terminator 2.

While I hear a lot of good things about the $400 import 1911's from Turkey and Phillipines, I think $800 is the starting point to where one can get into a decent 1911 and still be proud to pass it on to the grandkids. Maybe one of the Remington's can be had for around $600 and they seem to be good but I'm worried about Remy lately.

Thanks for the clarification. I meant 01911c that you mentioned. I wonder if the TRP could fall under OPs requirement if found for 1000

Thank you. I picked it up used for $850 about 4 years ago. The front strap was already checkered and seemed like a very low round count. I installed an Ed Brown single side thumb safety. Then I installed a true Smith and Alexander grip safety.  Blended it, then bead blasted it and repolished the flats of the frame. People say the new Colts com with S&A grip safeties but they are not. They come with a bulbous, poorly fitted, oversized safety that actually pushes your hand back and down instead of up and into the gun.

My vote would be the TRP Operator variants.   You can find a slightly used TRP all day for under 1k.

I've owned several 1911's over the years. Here are my favorites under 1k.

Colt, check the competition series, but there are many others.

Springfield, same as above the RO is a solid choice. We have had them in the rental program at work, they have taken a lot of abuse without issue. The new RONIN looks promising.

RIA, mine have mostly been good. I shot one in USPSA Single stack for some years. With heavy use the small parts start to poop the bed. But solid guns for the price, the Colt and Springfield have better small parts. Especially the Colts.
