My son in law is looking for a 1911 for carry and home protection. He's a skinny 6'3", so he can hide it OK.

He has some money to spend, wants one ready to go out of the box without having to "fix" it. But he's not wanting to spend more than needed, no STI or anything, just a solid gun.
Prefers the 4.25" bbl length, modern sights, looks good.

What's the current market?  I haven't looked at 1911s much lately, and I am more of a fixer-upper than he is; I don't mid polishing and changing springs and sights. He wants it ready to break in and run.

Thanks;

Hi,
I've owned all sizes, colors and lengths of 1911's.  I went from Springfield Armories to Colts and a few hand built ones from others.  I like Springfield Armory, they have good products at decent prices.  Colt makes fine pistols and the newest Colt is the M-45.  It's a beast, hefty and with a 8 round mag, it is a steady platform.  I'm 6' and 265# so I can hide a full size 1911, under my shirt.  I prefer the fullsize ones, but that's my personal preference.  Good Luck with your quest in finding one for your Son-in-law.

1911s...
Had great luck with:
Colt
Cimarron
.mil issued

Bad luck with
Llama
Rock Island Armory
Kimber

Currently in the market for a nice used or new 70 series Colt. Scarce as hens teeth.

I have a Smith 1911 SC in the safe that hasn’t been fired in probably 5 years and I’ve been clearing out.

Works great, has holster wear.

Email or IM if interested.

Springfield got rid of the Range Officer; that would have been my advice. I like my 9mm RO.

Today; look at the Ronin, the Garrison, or the Loaded Springfields. Or really anything except the Mil-spec (nothing wrong with it, but not what I would consider for defense; it's deliberately leaving out all the advances of the last 80 years)

Plenty of good 1911's out there; from many makers, I think Springfield has the best mix of variety and quality. You can find what you want and it'll work.

Tisas "Tanker" (Commander), but will need better sights.  For around $400 it's a LOT of gun.

I like my colt competition.  They come with novak sight cuts in case you want to swap to night sights or something.

Does he want series 70 or 80?  For a carry gun, i would go with a 80, but a lot of folks think its unnecessary trash.

A lot depends on budget. Can’t go wrong with a Wiley Clapp Colt Commander.

I’m a big Springfield fan as well.

Dan Wesson is nice but more money

The Ronin looks like it fits his criteria perfectly. But I'm saving for a Dan Wesson.  Thanks everyone!

Dan Wesson 45acp. I prefer the lightweight aluminum frame with 4.25" barrel and bobtail grip. The Guardian model is nice.

Even smoother in 9mm.

Cousin to Guardian

To balance the opinions on Commanders presented
Good experiences with Colt, Kimber, STI, and one Springfield
Less than good experiences with most Springfields

Out of them all, Colt.

Dan Wesson. If not Dan Wesson, Colt or SA.

1911 require more frequent recoil spring change than newer captive recoil system most newer guns running these day, and run wet. That's the minimum to get it running smooth. Just words of caution to your son in law. Colt and Springfield get my vote.

Wiley Clapp Colt commander, etc Colt, or something from Dan Wesson.
Ruger makes a commander 1911 with an alloy frame as well.

If you're going Dan Wesson you should be good..

Colt and Springfield would be my next choice. The Ronin is a great gun for the price. I've seen a few and the only thing I'd want is front strap checkering.

I'm going to zig, to everyone's zag.

Bul Armory Commanders can be had for song right now, due to the Shekel < Dollar exchange rate .

You get a better than Colt quality handgun,  for Springfield prices.

A Bul is most likely next on list.
