I put off grabbing one for years, seeing them abundant, plentiful and cheap I figured “Someday but not today.” Now that I want to find a 645, 4506 or even plain old 5906 they can’t be found anywhere locally

It was a slow but steady process. As large agencies transitioned from the Smith the price got down to $200 for a lot those guns except the 10mm which didn't fall below $500. I bought a couple 5906s about 5 years ago for $350 and feel lucky. The supply of those guns has long dried up. I was at a gun show in 2015 and guy had a LNIB 5946 wanting to sell it nobody would offer him anything. He came to my friends table and wanted a scope that was $300 but was turned down an even swap. I asked the guy if he would take $300 for it so he could just buy the scope. He agreed. My Buddy later said he made a mistake. Check out the original price tag.

I’ve got a 5904 and a 5906 that I like but they really don’t get shot much.

Edit: the 5904 is pretty beat up but I only paid $180 on an auction for it.

You can still find the occasional deal on gunbroker.  A lot of times though they're stupid expensive.

Recently people realized the quality of them and they have been out of production for years so now they have become collectors items. Used to be able to get one for a few hundred bucks. Now they've gone way up in price. Reminds me of SKS rifles. Can't believe what they go for now.

Mine

Saw several this weekend; 4566 and earlier 5906.  Used, they were going for $750 each.  Saw a stainless 39-2 for $950.

Here is a really nice example of an early 4506 transition pistol I picked up last fall. It has never been fired and came with the correct box, cleaning and SAP tool. All still wrapped in the paper.

Adjustable sights, and notice that it does not have the barrel hood frame cut, stainless slide lock and hammer, decocker. Not much MIM on this rare example. Then about a month after I got it I found 3 still in the package S&W mags for it.
