Leather was king back in the late 80's/early 90's. Milt Sparks, Rosen, Desantis, Galco, Don Hume, Bianchi were all holster makers. Pancake leather holster were pretty common. Concealed carry wasn't a thing were I lived, so I didn't pay too much attention. But I do remember seeing ads in the various gun mags for them.
I bought a Uncle Mikes molded nylon owb holster back in the early 90s and it was my competition setup. It was similar to the kydex holsters of today that are formed to the shape of the gun. But instead of being completely rigid, it was 4-5 layers of nylon that had a little give to it while being pretty firm. It was half the cost of the nicer leather holsters but worked really well.
I really wanted a Milt Sparks holster back in the day, but they were too expensive for me at the time. I later got a Versa Max for my Sig P220 which also fit my P245. It's an excellent holster that is very comfortable.
