I've been looking for a S&W 36 or 60 for a while and they seem to be unicorns around my area, with according unicorn pricing.

I specifically want a 5-shot 38 Spl and I DON'T want a Charter (whatever iteration).

I have no experience with the Ruger LCR series and I am intrigued by them and their price.

Are they worth the reputation?

My summer CC piece is an LCR in 38. Super light. Great trigger. Swapped the front sight for an XS big dot. Owned a 642 and prefer the LCR.

I’ve always liked the classic Smith Bodyguard models.

I have a 642 and love it, especially with Altamont Grips. Carries like it's not even there (I've actually forgotten it and surprised myself in the bathroom) with an ANR Design holster.

Having handled one though...if I were to go buy a snubbie right now for carry, it'd probably be the LCR. Great little rig, seems to have a nicer trigger.

I like the S&W 442/642 for the looks, but that's about it. I carry the Ruger LCR in .38 +P as a backup gun in uniformed patrol. It's ugly as sin, but 1) it's light enough to carry comfortably on 12+ hour shifts while not being a pain to shoot .38 +P Winchester PDX1 or Speer Gold Dot, 2) Much smoother factory trigger than it's S&W counterpart, and 3) unlike it's S&W counterpart, you have the option of changing out the front sight of you desire an actual sight picture beyond what a dull "ramp and gutter" can offer. I have the XS front sight on my LCR, which just "pops" out at you. Hi-Viz makes a decent fiber optic sight, too.

I have a Bodyguard 38 Special.

I am waiting for a Ruger LCR in 38 to show up also

I like the Smith so far. The grip is great and it really soaks up recoil.

During summer T shirt weather, I carry a S&W model 40 with a a couple speed strips in a Humes IWB.  A J frame with a T grip is small revolver perfection.

My EDC is a 640 357mag.  I bitch about the weight til I shoot it. Then remember why I haven't sold it.

If I could change one thing on it I would put a sights like the Pro series has.

Ive got a bunch of J-frames and carry them as a BUG for 22+ years as a plain clothes LEO

I bought a .38 LCR a few years back and really like it. great trigger...

I'd recommend the 642 Airweight as an all around gun but I prefer the 342 Airlite .38 loaded with Gold Dot 135g +P for carry

Taurus.

They sell every one they make and have expanded production into a new plant. There are a lot of happy revolver owners, and for all the online complaints, I've read about as many S&W owners with the same. I'd like a S&W, but not for a $150 premium on top of it.

There is now also Colt. They are back in the game.

Rugers are also out there.

One thought - if price is a workable thing - a 5 shot 9mm moon clip is a favorite these days when you can find one. They don't last very long, people are on top of them like a duck on a June bug. There are advantages.

I've owned several LCR's and they're good guns with good traits like an easily replaceable front sight and smooth trigger pull, but I prefer the trigger reset on the S&W's.

VERY NICE!!!

How does that N frame pack?  How do you normally carry it?  Seems like the cylinder would be kind of big for a CC gun, but maybe not.....

And what is the top one?  It looks like either a 442 with a longer barrel than I've ever seen or a 640 that has had the finish changed and a port job and move of the front sight.....

And to the OP.  I've got nothing against the Ruger's other than I think they're butt ugly.  But who care how it looks if it shoots good?  I actually can shoot my 442 rather decent despite it being a pretty heavy trigger.  It's weird cuz it's like heavy at the beginning and then feels like it lightens through the pull.  So it's nice.  Even though it's like 12 pounds.  I like how mine carries and shoots.  It has been a blessing.  I do want to try a heavier one eventually because I don't shoot many plus p's through it without getting a flinch.  So I just stay away from them.

I kind of got a thing for Cheifs Specials. The model 36/60 is the perfect pistol imo. I like the heavier weight over alloy and the triggers are so much better not to mention the recoil.

I’m carrying a SW 649 on an OWB holster as I type.

Since it’s winter here (jacket weather) a Ruger LCRx rides in the coat pocket of my Carhart coat.

I’ve had both for many years and never an issue with either.

The trigger on the Ruger is a little smoother IMHO, and in the summer that is the one that get carried the most.

When I carry the gun, I'll carry either speed strips or speedloaders as well. The sole purpose of my CCW is to get me and mine outta harm's way- not fight a contracted battle.

On reflection, I guess there is a reason I want a 5-shooter: the profile of the gun and how well it carries on my body. With revolvers, that 1 extra round in the cylinder is uncomfortable IWB, which is my preferred carry method, especially since it rarely gets cold enough in FL to warrant me wearing a coat.

When I do wear a coat, my model 64 loaded with 110 grain JHPs works just fine.

My normal carry gun is a Kahr K9.

I went to a LGS and traded in my GSG-5 9" pistol that no one wanted to buy here.  I went with the intention of trading straight up for a NEW M856 6rd .38 he had there.  He agreed to an even trade but when I handled the gun the lockup was beyond poor and the cylinder release was stiff as could be.  He kind of snickered and said "yup".  Not to mention Taurus has ended their lifetime warranty and now only offers a 1-year I ended up taking cash instead and ordering a NEW LCR off gunbroker for $315 shipped.

I bought the LCR knowing only what I had read and seen on youtube regarding .327 Federal Mag. I'm an experienced .38 and .357 shooter, but was intrigued by both the performance of .327 and the additional round in the same sized snubby.

Now that I have some actual experience with it, I love it as well. I'm trying to be good, but those short barrel .327 SP101's are very very tempting.

He might not realize how close a DS is to a J frame in size.  I don't notice it being too much of a difference.  But the difference between a K frame and a J frame is significant.  That's probably what he's going by from 5 to 6.....  If you know what I mean.

Jealous!!!!

I want a steel j frame really badly.  Just to see if I'd like it more than my 442.  I'm sure I would like it more shooting but I wonder if I'd notice the extra weight carrying and if it would be a bummer.  My guess is not.

So that's my next goal for a gun.  36/60/49/649/640  Something like that.  I'm undecided about hammers though.  I carry AIWB and a hammer might be a nice thing to have to put your finger on when holstering.  But I could see how sometimes it might snag on draw.   However, I can see the utility in using single action for a  long shot.  But then I don't really want to get in a habit of shooting single action.  I think the 49/649 would be the best compromise though.

This police surplus 640 was magic for me.  In my hands, an airweight 38 is pretty much a belly gun.  Too light for me to control with any accuracy.  But this 640 adds just enough weight to make it a good shooter for me.  Also adds enough weight to make it a holster gun, too heavy for pocket carry. The grips help too.

The 9mm LCR really intrigues me. My EDC is a G19 and that’s the only pistol I currently own so a pocketable revolver in 9mm would be handy due to simple logistics. One ammo type for everything is nice and ballistics seem very respectable too.

I have read the recoil is a bear on the 9mm LCR.

"Shooting the 9mm round in such a small revolver was eye-opening. While not as violent as shooting .357 rounds in a small-frame revolver, the 9mm loads were very "snappy." The +P loads gave a little more recoil, but the difference was not great. It only took about 10 rounds to start feeling the sting of the 9mm loads. After one 50-round box and 15 +P loads, the recoil had become downright unpleasant, and I was done. Both the web of my shooting hand and my trigger finger are still very sore today. So, plainly, this isn't much of a fun gun for the range."

Very nice.  Out of curiosity, do you know how long that barrel technically is?  And do you know the measurement from the back of the cylinder to the end of the barrel how long that is?

I know at one time they made a 2.125" barrel on some of those newer stainless models.  But it almost looks like 2.5".....  Or 2.25"  ?

I like my 642

It takes a lot of practice to shoot one well.

I got 1000 rounds of brass, and started loading my Dillon 650

With practice, I can consistently do sub-1-second draws and hits on steel..from CCW front pocket carry.

S&W 642 draw from concealment

S&W 642 draw sub one seconds, five in a row on steel

The Hogue Tamer grips for the Centennial styled J frames work very very well. They don’t work with my Galco shoulder rig or the ankle glove with the strap though. They sell a Tamer for the LCR too I think.

I rented a LCR, and like another post said I found the reset odd. I have a lot of rounds through S&Ws and I’m just used to them.

I highly recommend renting a gun before you buy it. The smaller the frame, the lighter the weight, and the larger the caliber, the more important this is.

For some reason about 75% of the time I shot my 442 with the tamers, I drew blood from my right thumb from the take down lever.  I don't have that problem with boot grips.  I guess it's just where my thumb is with those grips.  They do help with felt recoil though and make the gun feel good in the hand.  However, my hands are not overly big and my pinky pretty much gets on the grip on a booth grip.   Plus I feel like I have better trigger control with with a grip that doesn't cover the backstrap.  Although I think ideally there would be a grip that adds just a bit of material over the back strap.  Just not as much as the tamers.

That's how they fit me.
