0.375 ball. Fill the chambers to approx. 1/8 inch of full with FFF black powder. No.11 caps. Will hit higher than you might expect, shooters often aimed around the navel of the opponent.

It’s been refinished, so that probably ruined the value. Attached File Attached File I’ve never shot it. It was my Grandpa’s. |

Those are beautiful, congrats. I always wanted a stainless Ruger Old Army. I know they aren't "traditional" and I do like the traditional but there's something about the Ruger that always appealed to me. Sadly, by the time I finally acquired an interest in cap and ball, the Rugers were well out of my budget.

If you are really desperate for caps there's a kit that lets you punch them out from beer cans and includes priming compound. I've also seen caps appear on places like powder valley in the past couple months but they are gone within minutes, similar to primers. I've bought 12k primers at the new market normal price in the past 2 months. |

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between #10 nipples?
I remember putting new nipples on my 1860 but forgot which kind |

Nice London Model. Enjoy shooting it. Love Cap and Ball because you can top off the cylinder with powder or put in small loads with filler. Yes, I have always found the Colts shoot higher than the Remington.

I replaced all mine with them because the OEM one’s on my four pistols were hit and miss on cap size. Some liked #11 better, some 10’s. Now all I buy are Remington 10’s and I’m gtg. Attached File |

View Quote FWIW... I have a 1992 production Uberti 1851 Navy. It shoots best with .380 balls. .375s are a bit too small and accuracy suffers. For punching paper 15 grains of powder is fine. If you want more power 22 - 25 grains works well. I like a lubricated felt wad under the ball to keep fouling soft during extended shooting sessions. Not as messy as grease over the ball, which gets blown everywhere. But as long as the ball is properly oversized neither is required to prevent chain fires, despite the old wive's tale. Original 19th Colt revolver instructions did not mention the use of either. |

That ought to keep you going for a little while!
I got lucky in that my Lee .375" mould is a perfect fit, shaving nice little rings just like yours. Mine pulls double duty as I just got done casting 500 or so more to use as slingshot ammo! Works like a charm and hits like a hammer |

Cool gun
Just last night I started pricing the Navy Conversions. I think that will be my next purchase. |

Another great day spent shooting.
my old Pietta 1860 Army both have been 100% reliable since I upgraded to SLIX SHOT nipples Attached File |

Enjoy OP. I'm another who has a 1851 Navy .36 cal. Mine was made by Uberti in the late 70/early 80s for Western Arms Corp. Square backed and silver plated. I've got a single cavity Lyman .375 RB mold that I cast pure lead with. Those .375 along .311 also end up more in my 12 ga loads. Mine is a great shooter. Might break it out while home next week.

Nice to see this thread resurrected.
After getting one for my son for Christmas 2-3 years ago, I've been toying around getting one for myself. I really like that the "manual of arms"; forces you to slow down and concentrate/practice on the fundamentals. I planned ahead at the time and purchased a couple thousand caps and 5-6lbs of fffg powder (already had some "p" and "RS" pyrodex but im not a fan, I also cast my own ".375 RB and make my own wonder Wads®" Nobody ships directly to my front door anymore and that was a big part of the draw or these revolvers. Also, my son's '51 has lost its loading notch feature. Don't know anything about these but the bolt leg is slipping off the cam stud on the hammer waaayyy to early; it actually looks like it has 2 mismatched parts because the leg of the bold (cylinder stop) only barely engages the cam stud (only the very extreme tip of the bolt; almost as if the bolt legs need to be ?"-¼"longer even when it was working properly. Either way, I'd love to get another! |
