Local gun shop has a bunch of revolvers on consignment and two caught my eye.

First is a blue S&W 27-2 with a 3.5” barrel and the second is a 19-5 with 2.5” barrel. Both appear to be in good condition but the 27 is about 2x the price.

Unfortunately both isn’t possible...what to do?

Both are nice revolvers in desirable barrel lengths, can't really go wrong either way.

27 will be heavier, softer shooting, and easier to eject since the ejector rod is full length.

19 will be lighter, will have more options for grips since you can do round butt or round to square butt conversion grips, but will be a little harder to eject.

27 would be harder to conceal if that is a consideration.

Always go with the 27... one of the most beautiful firearms in the world...

I would get the 27 because I haven't seen one of those with that barrel length in at least 20 years. I saw a 19 2.5" last week.

Yup. It's been my most coveted S&W next to a 2.5"  19 or 66 no-dash.
That's a tough one, OP. Is the 27 a round butt? If it is, I'd get that but if not I'd get the 19.
ETA: My 627 is a round-butt 5" so I'm not too sure what the 27 offers as far as stocks.

In the 80's the Python and the Model 27 were the 2 top guns to buy.
So I would say go with the 27.
The 19 was made to shoot mostly 38's and be a lighter gun for police to carry.

I am much more of a K frame guy over N frame. A 3.5inch 27-2 is not worth twice the cost of the 19-5 to me unless the 19 is priced at $500 or less. That said, the 3.5inch 27-2 is one of the hottest things going in the revolver market. You willing to give us the prices for them? Be more able to make a evaluation then. What is your purpose for the gun? Carry piece, home defense, range toy?

The 3 1/2" 27 (and pre 27's) are, to a lot of people, one of the best looking and most desirable guns Smith ever made.

Depends on what you want to do with them.

Collectible? Get the 27. The pinnacle of Smith and Wesson revolvers. Also has the pinned and recessed features as well, which were dropped around 1982.

Fun range gun? Either with a nod toward the 27.

Knockaround gun, something to store in the truck and might get dinged up? Get the 19. It is not pinned and recessed, but it's still a solid K frame.

My vote goes to the 27. I have a 5" model and the thing is just gorgeous. The 19 is more utilitarian but is still the classic blued K frame revolver. You won't go wrong with either one.

I wouldn't have to think about it at all. If I could afford it , the 27.

I suspect that in the future the 27 will be harder to find (as it is now in general).

Grab the 27 now and with some looking you should be able to find a 19 in the future.

i have a 27-2 5", my favorite revolver. also a 29-3 4". but the 27 is tops in my book. good luck!!!

Went back and looked at them today, still no decision yet but definitely leaning towards the 27.

They are asking $1500 for the 27 and $800 for the 19. They are part of a large estate consignment so prices are pretty firm.

Here are the pics. The picture of the 19 has a mark on the barrel which I didn’t even notice in person so it may look worse than it is.

The 27 looks awesome.  It would require a custom holster if you plan to carry it.
Holsters for a 19 would be off the shelf affair.

I would not pay what they are asking for either one, but that could very well be the going rate in today's market. If you pay that much for the 27 you may be able to get that much back later down the line if you ever sell it. There is a saying on the S&W forum which applies. You didn't pay too much, you paid too early. Meaning you paid tomorrow's price today.

Yeah...after seeing the pica I vote for the 27!!

Buy one, put the other on lay-a-way. Win-win.

S&W 27 is a world class .357 revolver built on a .44 mag frame. To me it's the only choice.

You need to shop around. I think they want close to double, and at least 30% more than what the M27 is worth.

Check out GunBroker for similar models. A 4" M27 is every bit as good as a 3.5.

They are WAY high on price, but between the two, 27-2.

Pricing on nice wheel guns is going up every day.  It's unreal. I'm looking at a 6.5" 27-2 in nickel.  Awesome gun, love N frames

I have multiples of both, and vote 27.  It's Smith's "Python".

I have a 27-2 in 3.5", a pre 27 in 3.5" and a 27-2 in 4"

Beautiful guns.

Setting the historical significance of the Model 27 & 357 Mag aside.  A 6-shot 357 Magnum N-frame is retarded.  If you're going to buy a 357 Magnum N-frame at least buy a 627 and get 8-shots.  Why would you want all that bulk and weight with no advantage over a K-frame or even an L-frame.  When buying a 357 mag revolver it should be J-frame 5-shot, K-frame 6-shot, L-frame 7-shot and N-frame 8-shot.  It's already capacity limited why would you not maximize that capacity for a give frame size?

Two great revolvers !
If you have to choose just one , I'd say take the 27 .

As "good", maybe. As desirable, no.

TRUTH

N frame and beautifully finished is more expensive for a reason.  Having owned multiple 19s (and my first handgun purchase), I'd take an L frame 686 over a 19 all day long and save money.  I'm always surprised by how expensive 19s are.
