I am new to the 1911 game, and need to figure out the temperament of my guns by running some hollow points before I can carry one. With that being said, .45acp is expense. Whats the least expensive, quality SD hollow points. I do not care about the best performing, I am aware I will likely never have to shoot someone or something, I just want to make sure the bullet doesnt go through the intended target and end up in my neighbors cat.

I haven’t had a 1911 in a long time. But a colt, para ordinance, and one other sometimes had feeding issues with certain HPs. I don’t remember which ones.
But I DO remember that Golden Sabers worked fantastic. I believe their design led to better feeding reliability. |

I sometimes find PD trade in Ranger T at my LGS. Last time they had it it was $25/50rd.

Golden Sabers getting a lot of love so far. Let me check them out. Does wal mart sell pistol ammo anymore? I remember their prices being decent.

View Quote No, they don’t sell anything that will fire out of an “assault weapon” their words not mine. They do sell “hunting” ammo like .30-30 but I did see some high end .308 once. And yes, they used to have great prices on pistol ammo. |

Pick one from this list that meets your price considerations.

Gold Dot or HST. Never had any feeding issues with either in my Colt series 70.

Cheapest and Best don't go together, here's some options on the cheapest and still adequate side
PMC Bronze 185gr JHP @ 48 cents a round Sellier & Bellot 230 gr JHP @ 48 cents a round |

It used to be Win. white box that Walmart would sell.
Now, most JHP are expensive. So, if you are going to pay, may as well get something good like HST or Ranget-T. Last month, I bought a bunch of that Sierra 185gr JHP. It shoots really well for me and with the rebate, it was about as cheap as FMJ. But I have no idea how it compares to HST etc. |
|
Gold Dot 230 grain.
If necessary you can load your own. Plenty of load data. |
|
The best and least expensive don’t go together too often. The best are Rangers, HST and Gold dot across all calibers. Winchester white box, when you can find it is a very, very good performer for a little more than ball prices. I’ll try to find a link showing it’s performance, it mirrors SXTs and it should because it has early design features of SXT.
White box gel test ETA the price has gone up tremendously! I used to buy this at Wally World for about the same price a ball. Now it’s over $1.00 a round. |

Speer Gold Dot 185gr. It'll get the bullet flying out the muzzle at 1050 FPS, which is plenty enough past expansion threshold.
It's two dollars a round or thereabouts, but it's .45 ACP and a good defensive load is a bit more difficult to come by than with 9mm. |

Federal used a 5-inch barrel to get their on-the-box figure of 890 FPS and 405 foot-pounds at the muzzle. For a 3.3-inch barrel, they're okay. That big dude, Andrew (who does the Arfcom Youtube gig), did a test with the XDS and got ~760 FPS. That being said, the 185gr Gold Dot is my go-to for .45 ACP personal defense. The 230gr HSTs have good penetration and expansion and especially great when compared to many other .45 ACP JHP loads, but the 185gr delivers a bit more energy and somewhat less felt recoil with expansion and penetration that largely match. Better in price, most certainly yes. Better in expansion and penetration? No, but about on par. Energy and recoil? No. Yeah, my wallet hates the 185gr Gold Dots, but it is what it is. |

Didn't box of truth or old painless do a good test on some not so popular brands and found some surprises? I tried to find that test he posted , but the Golden sabers and one of the S&B's did better than expected.

Quoted: According to Luckygunner, the 230 gr HST had similar penetration to the 185 gr Gold Dot and .13" more expansion. The muzzle velocity for the HST was 822 fps and the GD was 954 fps. The test was done with a Kahr CW45 with a 3.6" barrel. Energy is irrelevant. I don't see a win for GD. Quoted: I already did. You gain nothing for the extra money. 180 gr 40 S&W would be a better choice at that bullet weight. View Quote I guess I'll just have to assume that was a dig, then. If you want to run 230gr HSTs, then go for it. It's far from a horrible load, and as you said, it's much less expensive. I stick with the 185gr Gold Dots, just like 'em better. |

I've been buying 230 gr. HSTs at Academy and they are not crazy expensive.

I'm sure it's not the best, but it's certainly cheap with the rebate and free shipping from PSA. $99.99 with free shipping up front, $49.99 for 200 rounds after the $50 mail in rebate (but today only, I think):
SIERRA SPORTS MASTER 45 ACP AMMO 185 GRAIN JHP, 200RDS - $99.99 with free shipping (plus $50 rebate) Their normal listing is $109.99, still with free shipping and eligible for the $50 mail in rebate: SIERRA OUTDOOR MASTER 45 AUTO AMMO 185 GRAIN JHP, 200RDS - $109.99 with free shipping (plus $50 rebate) |

Wow I was surprised to see my thread was at the very top of the ammo section after all of this time.
Sunday I met up with an ARFIF member and purchased a smidge over 500 rounds of Federal HST 230 grain bullets for a fair price. Just need some time to run to the range and test reliability out in my pistols. I am glad to see these bullets exist, and what they are priced at. A lot of the SD ammo is going for over $1.00 a round. The HST was a good value for me. If I end up ever having to use them and they fail, I guess it was Gods will for me to die that day, or end up in the slammer. |

I have been seeing 230 gr HP fact loads for 20 bucks a box they are about the cheapest stuff I see and they work great . Armscor in a yellow box stuff .

Absolutely decimates heart and lung tissue. Does not care about hitting shoulder or rib. |

Remember that Sierra SportMaster bullets are more a target bullet than hunting/defensive bullet. Their collaboration with Sig in the V-Crown is intended for defensive purposes from Sig.
Look for HST ammo in 50 ct boxes versus the small 25 ct boxes. HST is usually cheaper than Speer Gold Dots. |
|
Speer Gold Dot ... period ... in any caliber for defensive purposes ...
|
|
I would prefer Winchester Ranger . In 1911's Golden Sabres tend to feed well . Buy enough so that you can test fire the gun with the mags and ammo you are going to carry

As long as you're not shooting a 3" barreled pistol the Remington UMC JHPs and Winchester White Box JHPs. Are not bad performers.
|
|
185 +P Remington Golden Saber is my main go to load. My next is Gold Dot in any flavor. Having said that, I don't think I have seen anything that's been said turn out to be a bad performer. Run what functions best in YOUR pistol, and you can shoot well. Shot placement is probably the most critical aspect in a defensive shoot.
