What can you tell me about the Speer gold dot 40S&W -165g -53947?

Is it a good round?

I just bought a case of it and it works fine. Anything that exit my barrel and hits a target works for me. If you seek ballistics, Google is your friend.

It was a LEO load for a while.

Somebody thought it was decent enough at the pews.

I've put a few thousand through a M&P40c with zero issues.

Didn’t Speer make two 165 rounds? A slow one and a faster one?

IIRC, the FBI purchased some lower pressure/velocity 165 grain .40 ammo.  I bought some a decade or two ago and they were the most accurate .40 ammo that I ever tried.  Don't remember if they were Gold Dot or Hydra-Shoks.

Yes. I will have to dig through my stash to see which the OP is referring to. I have both somewhere...

I personally like the lighter "FBI" load going around 1050fps. The full power load is going around 1150 and is a little snappy for my weak wrists and lotioned-up hands.

"It puts the lotion on its skin" - it sure seems like us 40cal guys are a dying breed. Tough as hell to find quality pistol parts. Had too many seeds to start over w 9mil

It wouldn’t be my first choice(or 2nd,3rd, 4th or 5th). While GoldDots are generally good and a safe bet for self defense ammo, Speer does have a couple poor performing loads. This seems like one of them….

There are much better options out there in .40. Personally I prefer the 180gr HST.

165gr Gold Dot ballistic test/Lucky Gunner.

It's possible it's a crappy load. But I also think something went funky with that test. Clear jell? The tests I saw using actual organic ballistic jell showed this load doing very well.

Many people (not me) consider the Gold Dot 9mm 147gr a great load. It's clocking around 975fps and seems to expand reliably. Meanwhile the load in question is 165gr , much larger JHP cavity, going 1050 yet fails to expand and sucks badly?

I checked my stash. The Speer Gold Dot 40SW 165gr load 53949 is the "FBI" load that is light, going around 1050fps.

The other 165gr Gold Dot load in 40SW is 53970 that is hot, going 1150+.

53970 is the 180gr Gold Dot.

These are all in the 50 round LE boxes.

I dont have any "53947" that the OP is asking about and have no idea what it is.

What do you guys think of the Federal 180g HST rounds? Heard these were also Federal LEO agency rounds for awhile…

It has been replaced by 53970.

They are both 165 grain hollow point Gold Dot law enforcement loads rated at 1150 fps.

Unlike the hot Remington load, they don't actually reach 1150 feet per second.

They compare well with the other 165 grain law enforcement loads.
