I'm not much of a fan of engraving, but that is exquisite.

Sigh....that's just beautiful.  Not a big fan of snubnose revolvers but that's one I'd own in a heartbeat.  Combined with those grips it's a sweetheart!

S&W Model 10-5 made in 1971 and a Colt Police Positive Special made in 1958. Both are police surplus guns that have been ridden hard and put away wet.

That hat was in NYC on 9-11 by the way.

I've been told that's the famous big mitt of one Bill Jordan. He makes an N frame look like a K. Most humans can't take that hold on a .41 or .44 without some serious pain, but he wasn't 'most humans.'

Just picked this up. Seems to be a 1954/55 made pre-model 28 Highway Patrolman.

Can't believe I've missed this thread for so long.

Need to find a set of grips for this one. British 2nd model hand ejector. Anyone know where?

I dont think i will ever get rid of this one. A old 686-2, no MIM, firing pin still on the hammer where it belongs. The single action trigger is simply amazing! It has just enough wear on it that i can through it in my chest rig and carry it fishing all summer in water, dirt and snow and not worry about it. Love guns that get used. To think i bought it when no one wanted revolvers. Paid about $375 used for it if i remember correctly.

These two S&W are what would be considered gentleman's revolvers since they're small framed five-shot .38s. But they aren't. 38 Special, oh no, these are in .38 S&W. A cartridge dating back to 1877.

The top-break is a S&W .38 Double Action 2nd Model and the solid frame is a S&W Model 33-1 .38 Regulation Police, built on the J-Frame.

Reloading is vastly different, yet very simple for both.

Size wise, the grip of the top-break is slightly shorter than the solid frame but overall length from the back of the frames to the end of the barrels is about the same.

Both are fixed iron sights. Nothing is adjustable.

I don't shoot either often, but I do shoot them and have carried both in the past. They're comfortable and the .38 S&W, while a slouch compared to modern defense loads, is not completely useless. A 145gr .361 lead slug traveling just under 700fps will still ruin someone's day with a good "T-Box" hit.

The .38 S&W has a history of putting bad guy six feet under. It served as a police duty cartridge in the US prior to WWI and served the British Armed Forces and it Colonies from the 1920s all the way to the 1960s and beyond in some far flung locations that used to be under the Union Jack.

One such famous use of the .38 S&W was by Colonel Rex Applegate himself. After WWII, Col. Applegate was down in Mexico working as a contractor to train and modernize the Mexican Armed Forces. While down there in 1950, he and a Mexican Army Officer were attack by a machete wielding loon. The Colonel was concealed carrying a S&W Top-Break Lemon Squeezer in .38 S&W and plugged the attacker. All while the Mexican Army Officer was still fumbling, trying to draw his 1911 from a flap holster.

All in all, fun little guns and I can't wait until brass, powder, and primers become affordable again. I have about 300 rounds left. But I want more.

Any square butt S&W K frame grips should fit.

To find out which grips would have been original, a question posed in the pre 1960 forum will get a quick answer. And if you keep an eye on their accessories classifieds you will eventually find a set of originals for sale.

I’ll look in my copy of Standard Catalog of S&W 4th edition. A serial number would help narrow my search down.

Interesting grips! Any info on them? Model 12s are great.

A quick, inexpensive way to shroud a hammer.

I'm not who you asked, but seeing as no one replied to your question....

Those grips were made by Bianchi. They are solid and they are heavy! As for being an inexpensive way to shroud a hammer, last I checked, people were paying good money for those grips on the used market as they have been discontinued. But yes, still far cheaper than that beautiful Colt with the factory shroud.

Thanks @Shaylex.

While looking for an oversized cylinder stop for a new to me police trade in M65 I found a set, or a similar set at Numrich. No brand mentioned and $35, so I ordered them along with the cylinder stop.

Maybe it’s just me, but I never cared for the Camel Hump Smith’s. Granted I own one ,won it in a drawing to help out a mentor dealing with medical bills, but if I were to purchase something along that line, I’d go straight for the hammerless models.

As new in the original box, pre-10 Military & Police 4" model at?  It's a 1953 and still has the original 1953 dated sales price trigger guard hang tag and sales price sticker on the box.
