Just acquired (Gunshow find) a Smith and Wesson Model 34, 4" barrel.  It was advertised as an "early" model.  I know it's post-1966 since it doesn't have the flat cylinder latch, but it's before the 34-1 (no "dash" serial number M43XXX).  So what date range would this be?

thanks much.... I got married in '70, graduated college in '71 and grad school in '73, so I'll consider this a graduation present to meself.

Just shot a steel challenge match today with my 34. Mine is the 2” and I get some funny looks shooting it at such an event. But unlike all the fancy custom guns I am not cussing about malfunctions and don’t have to worry about magazines. And while not the fastest I tend to never need more than the five rounds needed per string of targets.

I may try that as well.... I normally use a 1954 Colt Officer's Model Special, which gets enough odd looks. and our club allows one centerfire and one rimfire in the same match for the same entry fee.
