Got this one recently and changed out the grips and thumb piece.  Shown with it's new cocobolo grips.  Shown loaded with empties for realism.

I have a Lew Horton . Three inch I guess.

It is of course somewhat of a handful but it is nowhere near a lightweight so not as bad as expected .

My club holds plate shoots and every so often makes it a back up gun shoot for revolvers 3" or less . I shoot the 629 with light reloads just to be a wise guy

Nice looking piece!  I’ve got the same revolver (629 backpacker) and also put the same grips on.  I’ve never shot it and probably won’t with magnums now.  I’ve had heart surgery and just can’t handle heavy recoil after having my chest cracked.  I am itching to run some specials through it.

Very nice! I was going to start a new thread, but this one is a good place for this.

Thailand EBAY grips on a 29-10 Bounty Hunter. Factory grips were Pachmayr grippers.

I've had a hard time finding the right grips for this one. I've got an assortment of grips that fit, but nothing seemed right.  Rubber Hogues are a near perfect fit for my hand, but look ridiculous on this gun.   I wanted to put wood grips on it.   Picked up these on EBAY, about $35 from Jaruwan (sp?)  They feel great in my hands.

wow, Warhawk, those look amazing.  The color goes well with the bluing and what a terrific price.  Have you shot any hot loads with this setup?  THANKS!

Just got them installed last night, I haven’t shot it with this setup yet.  I had a set of wood Hogues on it before, not bad but too slick making me grip the hell out of it shooting magnum loads.

Seems like I'm not the only one who can't find the right grip for a 3 inch N frame.

What dash number is that one?  I have a 629-4 5 inch with a curved hammer like yours, all my other N frames have a flatter hammer.  I see that yours has the caliber marking roll stamped, my -4 is laser engraved.

Gotta be a dash 4 or earlier. Going with -4 because the early -4 and earlier had alotta flash chrome hammer/triggers.

I have a couple or three of these babies... I got into them 3 years ago when we started having Black Bear problems at our Family Mountain Home. Damned thing isn't afraid of humans, trying to get inside after we cook, tearing shit up, etc... They are now my favorite handguns. Top one is my favorite, an M629-5 Mountain Back Packer, middle is an M629-6, and the bottom is an M29-3, Lew Horton Special... I've ran CCI 200 grain .44Specials to 305gr Underwoods with my favorite load being Privi Partizans 300grain pills rated @ 1105 ft lbs... With gloves, I love shooting them all!

Mine is a S&W 296 (titanium/scandium frame, hammerless 44 spcl) and it too is REALLY snappy in recoil.

A good thing S&W still uses that GD trigger lock. Since I refuse to own one, it saves me a shit ton of $$$$$$$$$!!!

Some nice looking pieces in here.  I eluded to mine before so here she is (lower left).

My Lew Horton Model 24 is upper right.  Also a fine piece of hardware.  I’ve never fired magnums through the 3” 629.  That might change at the next pistol league (just for fun....).

This thread makes me want to shit out a flock of bald eagles.  I do love .44 Magnum wheelguns.

Why, though, did S&W discontinue the Mountain gun?  WHY?  The newish 69 is OK, but 6 is more than 5 and I would happily take the few extra ounces.

I wish I thought that way... Since I just sold my last one with that damned "Lock"... plugged by me with an Original Precision billet slug albeit... That shitty lock costs me lots of $$$ because of the Premium the Pre-Locks command! I'm only into 70's "J" frames, 80's Lew Horton Specials .44mags/specials, and small runs of the "Mountain Gun and Mountain Backpacker" series... And I thought AR's were a sickness...

I like this. It may end up on the obtain list asap.

I just acquired a 69 and a 686+ both 3" and am enjoying revolvers again. 44 mag is a hoot out of the 69. The GF is afraid of shooting it.

Boy that's no joke!
I have a 3" 629-4 that gets shot (mostly) with 44 spls.
180 gr magnums are stout but the 240 gr points the barrel straight up!
