Doing some searching for seven shot speed loaders and saw someone mention SL Variant. Read they were German and rather hard to get. Read they’d went out of production. Then searching about I find a website that sells new production ones in 5/6/7 shot. Want to make sure it’s legit thought I’d see if anyone had purchased them through there.

Just put in a small order. Hoping not a ripoff. Will compare to original SL Variant I have on hand.

ETA: They do state that it is a replica of the German original.

@Unkydon

Decided to go ahead and give it a whirl. Not sure which models you ordered I decided to just order the 7s now here’s the response I got. They had 5/6 shot models in stock showed out of stock on 7s on the website so I expected delay.

I wish they weren't so tall. I have a lot of leather comp2 sized.

I’m curious to see the size comparison they look about the size of HKS

I have one real one for K frame, found it in a lgs last year for 20 bucks. They are pretty similar to the HKS in size if you unscrew the big long rubber grip piece. I think you have to buy it separately for those replica ones anyway.

I’ve been waiting for those guys to make 7 shot ones, didn’t realize you could order them yet. Gonna order a few and see how it goes.

No looks like Comp1/2 will be short and comp 3 will be long speed beez and the one between them look close.

ETA hopefully it’ll fit HKS pouches as mentioned above. There plentiful albeit bulkier.

Got mine today.

L-252 fits S&W 686 (6 rds)
236J  fits S&W J-frames (5 rds)
L-272 fits S&W686 Plus (7 rds)

Definitely a reproduction of the original SL.  Including the logoed bag and instructions. Very well done.

I'll use mine for a while and see how it holds up to the original.

First observations of the 236J:

1. Mine functions as it should. Adjustments to bullet splay are the same as the original.
2. Plastic is slightly different but very close. The reproduction is injection molded like the original.
3. The round center plunger that contacts the gun to release the rounds is slightly smaller than the original. The brass square post that it sits on looks identical.
4. There is a slight edge at the base of the recess on the handle that is not felt on the original.
5. The assembly screws appear to be galvanized instead of stainless steel (same pattern and appear to be the same size).

A very accurate duplication. They did a very good job. I was hoping for but did not expect this quality.

You can tell them apart, but if you did not have an original to compare it to you would be hard-pressed to do so.

Also, the box from Japan included three slick printed cards. Two with info on the speed loader and one that says "Happy Memorial Day... Remember and Honor".

Thank you for the write up on them. Hopefully mine will arrive soon they departed Kawasaki Port on the 6th. Look forward to testing them out going to have to have some pouches made I guess if they work as they should. I don’t believe @ works post Edit so I’ll add them to mine

One more thing.

My order would have been shipped sooner but it was delayed because the 7 rd loader was on back order.

The whole order was held up then shipped together via Japan post. I guess it traveled by air as it did not take very long.

I placed my order on the 13th and received them on the 19th from Japan, not sure how they managed that one. Anyway, initial review from me is not great.

I bought 4 of them and on 3 of them the splay adjustment was non functional. I opened up my original one and the new one to compare and it appears they were not assembled properly. Hard to explain in words but the inner workings are virtually the same as the original just were not put together how they were supposed to be.

I got that part to work but the other issue is the retention of rounds is not nearly as good as the original. The real one feels like you could whip it at the wall and it would keep the rounds in, the new ones you can pull the rounds out with moderate force. Some of the plastic bits are kind of rough and stick together so maybe with some use it will fix this.

Another thing, I’m not if this is how the original 7 round model was made, but the holes are not connected like on the 6 round model, so if you squeeze it it will flex enough that rounds start popping out.

All in all I wouldn’t really recommend these, at least not the 686+ ones that I got.

Forgot to add: the k frame loader in the pics is an original that I was comparing them to.

Not the most comforting of reviews hopefully I have better luck with mine if they ever show up. Odd they’d leave the openings all connected rather then individual chambers as in the other models. Hopefully they line out. The rough ness of the parts is that something you think could be dressed up and smoothed out or would it be not feasible to get to that particular part?

ETA: Placed mine on 6/21/2022 Received order notification on 7/1/2022 ship notification 7/4/2022

I did some digging and and found some old pictures and it looks like the original 7 shot sl variants look the same as these new ones do. Must have just not been enough room to make individual holes, although the HKS loaders do.

I’m going to keep messing with them when I have time and see if I can get them smoothed out.  They aren’t all that complex when you open them up, it’s a pretty neat design.

I have an original seven rounder. I will try and track it down and compare it to the new second rounder.

My 5 round j-frame units were good... actually really good replicas. But not as good as an original.
