So I have a Ruger SP101 with the 4.2” barrel.
I use 180gr hard cast when hunting.
I dont use a steady diet of them. There usually for a finishing shot on a hog or gator.
Now i have a guy at work who thinks hes gun Jesus. Any way
Is it true a steady diet of regular magnum loads will wear your gun out?.

How fast are you pushing them?

Rugers are built like tanks, so I mean yeah you could wear it out faster by shooting those but the gun will still last five lifetimes....so you don't have anything to worry about.

It will outlast any other double action revolver given the same loads.

Im honestly not sure of the FPS but id say i fire 1 to 2 hardcast per year. I mostly shoot regular off the shelf. 357 mag loads.
I try to stay away from alot of . 38spl because its for hunting and i dont want the carbon rings to build up and cause feeding issues with the longer rounds.

If you put 20k rounds a months through it then yes something could wear out but most people don’t.

As long as it's a safe load and not stupid excessive your great grandkids could still be shooting it.  Assuming it is legal still.

It's the K-frame S&W that can't take a steady diet of 357 Magnum loads. The bottom of the barrel has a flat cut into it at the forcing cone, and the barrel develops cracks on the bottom of the forcing cone because of this. No other revolver has this problem.

I shot 3 rounds of full boogie 357s out of a SP101 one time.

I think the shooter will wear out or surrender long before that gun will!

Ha ha ha, wear out a Ruger!  Good luck, especially with heavy cast bullets.  Goodness, do they even make enough powder?

The SP101 will be fine, and if you manage to wear it out Ruger will replace it. They are very overbuilt for a 5-shot revolver and specifically engineered to be immune to the long-term issues guns like the S&W Model 60 had with lots of full magnums. I've never heard of a Ruger revolver wearing out and I've known people who put full magnum loads through them for a long time.

If you have a coworker telling you your SP101 will be worn out by constant magnum loads, he's an idiot. That was the case for older .357 magnum k-frame and j-frame S&Ws but has never been true of the Ruger revolvers.

All brands can have cracked forcing cones.

true, but I think the poster you are quoting meant that they were particularly infamous for the cone cracking issue, as well as frame stretching iirc. The older K and J frame .357 guns simply weren't built to handle a steady diet of magnums.

The Ruger SP101 is by far the most overbuilt revolver in it's size class. You won't hurt it with any factory .357 load. It will take a steady diet of .357 without issue.
