Looking around for a nice 1911 in 10MM. Found a Rock Island for $900. Was wanting to hold out for the SA Ronin though. Are the Rock Island 1911's good, bad?

Built like a tank.

That’s a new price, right?

Mine’s been solid- but I probably haven’t put over 300 rounds through it. I got mine for $700 new, but that was 2017/2018.

Not going to win any beauty contests, but I’d not hesitate to use it for CC.

Also got mine in 2018. Rock solid as he said, 900 should be new.

Have a Rock Island double stack 1911 and love the gun.  It shoots well and fits my hand like a glove.

My coworker has one and I like it better then my Sig P220 in 10mm. That cost a lot more then his. Great gun for the price and his had been super accurate.

RIA is still a great value, but they’ve been creeping up in the last decade.

I had one like that until my son decided he needed it more.

Mine was a .38 Super.

The guns are good. I love my 9mm but I also paid less than half of what OP is looking at for it used. Depending on how close it is in price to a Springfield I would lean Springfield as I have had great luck with them.

45, I’ve never had a nickel 1911 and Didnt want to pay 1500 + for a pistol I was afraid to scratch.

The grips are the American ivory from boone trading. I like them.

Found a RIA but a little over $1000. Still prefer a SA Ronin. Whish SA would get these Ronin's shipped out!

Reliability is a mixed bag. They come with warranties, but I've known people who've had to send them back multiple times and now they almost work just right. I still have one, but it has hangups. I wouldn't bet my life on it, but it's fun to play with and shoot. Sometimes the malfunctions make it more irritating than fun tho.

When I was younger, I felt that way too about a 1911 that might malf on a factory round every couple of mags. Figured it was good 'training' learning to clear the malf quickly and get the gun 'back in the fight.'  Over time as I got older, and especially as I learned more about the 1911 'platform,' that perspective changed.

With range time being sporadic anyway, a malf-prone 1911 got irritating and inspired less confidence in it for defensive use, causing me to ask myself:  'Self, what's the point of shooting good factory .45 ammo through an unreliable 1911?'

So instead of putting up with it, that 1911 would get sold off or traded at the LGS or Fun Show.  Happily, the 1911s I own now all run 100% and shooting them is a real pleasure.

Yup 10 years ago they were a fantastic deal.  Now they're only slightly less than other brands.  Plus once you see how the trigger guard is different you cannot unsee it .  Looks like they somewhat "fixed" that, they used to have much more of a slant to them then they do now.  I also appreciate how they fixed the stupid ass giant rollmark on the slide to a tiny one.

OP, I have two, both in 10mm.

One is a Commander, which is my truck gun. Nicely accurate, well built, IMO. No issues. Fiber optic rod for front sight which is a blessing for me.

Other is a 2011. Nicely accurate, well built. Mags are sourced in only one place as far as I've found so far. Heavy when loaded, steel frame & double stack mag. Recoil is minimal due to the steel though.

I'd buy them both again, which is about THE highest compliment I can give a gun, IMO.

My .o2

For the money, I would look at Ruger or putting a bit more in for the Colt or Dan Wesson.

Experience from a RIA CS .45:
Slide stop doesnt seat all the way into the slide on an empty mag or even when pushed which started peening a bit until setting in. The slide stop rides the detent so it cannot go up further.
Barrel has visible, circular drill marks which appears done prior to button rifling. Some are near the muzzle.
Sear/disco have a shrunken appearance in non critical dimension areas, but works fine for now. Planned to replace.
Small springs (firing pin, slide stop detent pin spring) and grio screws had significant amount of rust prior to receipt.
Two piece guide almost loosened fully during 1st shoot, so it needed red loctite.
Non standard dovetail cut, and RIA used to not honor warranty unless they replaced the sights themselves.
Firing pin stops are fairly loose.
The RIA CS .45 was $350 over 5 years ago, and overall I'm happy with pie plate accuracy at 21 feet given a short barrel.

Just came across a 10mm Tac. 5”. No rail. Used for $430.00.
Told
My buddy to put it
On the side till the morning for me and I would let him know if I will take it. My biggest concern is that I only have about 400rds of 10mm on hand and we all
Know the current availability is nonexistent

Good firearm. I have a double stack 10mm. It's well built. But NO WAY I'd pay $900 for one.

I had an RIA 10mm last year. The thing was 100% reliable with multiple ammunition types and was laser-beam accurate.

It was a good gun. I wish I didn't trade it off.

Just pretend you're getting a 5.7 for a really good price and convince yourself ammo will always be expensive if not difficult to find.
