I posted this in GD, but politics is the topic of the day over there, so I'll put it here and check back later.

I have a  new Wilson Combat CQB and an old Colt Officers model.

I'm wondering if the Shock Buff recoil buffers are something I should use.  Neither gun is a carry gun
but could be used in a home defense situation.

So, you 1911 knowledgeable guys, what are your thoughts?

I no longer use them.

They can disintegrate, which presents a reliability problem.

They shorten slide travel.

Pistols seem to function and hold up just fine without them.

No harm in running without them.

I tried them. Anything for an edge or Advantage. I didn't find either and haven't used them since.

I don't use them.
But if you would like to try them, some say they do soften recoil.
Full size only gun, check for cracking everytime you clean it.

I used them 20ish yrs ago in 5" guns, but couldn't really tell they did much with a properly sprung and set up pistol.  I would not use them in anything under a 4.25" 1911, due to mentioned reduced slide travel.  If you want to help bulletproof your officer, switch over to an egw guide rod, flat spring, and Clark enhanced spring plug.  Best 49.00 bucks ive spent on my officer.

As a general rule due to the issues posted above, I avoid them.
Only place I use one is in my old WWII production pistol. Easing battering on a 75+ Y/o pistol that is only a range gun seems prudent otherwise no

I use them in my WWI guns just as a possible precaution. They don't get shot that much.

I would not use them in a carry gun.

I put Wilson shok buffs in my Beretta 92's and 96's.  Seemed like a good idea at the time and makes feel fuzzier and warmier.

It’s totally hit or miss on these little pads.... I’ve been using them since the 90’s... 45’s, 10mm’s, 9mm... some of mine they go Thousands of rounds then on other gun they are chewed in 300 rnds... then on one you have to try different thicknesses to get slidelock   Now mine are play setups Not carry.

I’ve got 70k on my Delta with buffer pad... they are comforting.  And on my 9mm govt it runs even softer with the buffer an very light rec spr.

Ya gotta play .... or totally toss them and walk away happily

Long time ago I tried them. Found some brands came apart very quickly. Only one actually held up more than a month or so. But eventually even that one got brittle and crumbled. Not going to replace one every week so I ditched them. The guns run fine without the extra padding.

I use them on my 45 Super conversion and my 9x23 Conversion.  I use very heavy recoil springs and mainsprings in these pistols and recoil buffers are just a little extra insurance.

I use Wilson Combat Shok-Buffs. Not for any supposed frame longevity benefits but because they turn the hard "whack" of the slide impacting the frame during recoil into a softer "whump" which I find more pleasant to shoot. I inspect them during every cleaning, and replace if they start looking shoddy, which takes about a 1,000 rounds.

In a 10/22 defintely!  I had a Simmons 10/22 3x9x22 scope that shit the reticle.

On a 1911, your choice.  Keep track of your rounds shot per recoil spring usage.

Replace the recoil spring on a regular basis.

I do not run em in my 45s, I recently put together a 10mm long slide with a cast frame and run the hottest ammo I can get so put one in it.
Does it help? I don't know, but it does not hinder the function at all. I clean my pistols after every range trip so it gets replaced then. I will leave it out see if I can tell a difference soon.
