why would someone choose a .38 Special over a 357 Magnum? The .357 will shoot anything a .38 will, and for those instances in which a big ol' black bear is eating your kayak, is the better choice.

A bunch of reasons, flash, recoil, ammo/gun weight.  Also, safety, same reason I don’t own any 45colt that won’t accept Ruger only loads.

size and weight, but this is mostly in regards to small CCW guns

Kayak eating bears are not very high on my threat list.

This... you can get a much smaller, lighter gun if it is only designed to shoot .38's

I much prefer .357 revolvers to .38's. My ratio of .357's to .38's is probably about 10-2 these days. If I do ever find myself in a kayak with a big bad b'ar trying to stuff itself I would likely be wearing one of these. Can run anything from bunny fart wadcutters to 180gr Buffalo Bore hard cast. Even being all steel not all that heavy to carry everywhere. With enough grip to get all your fingers on it powerhouse loads are still manageable.

Is that S&W 640? If so, how is the recoil with .38 and .357 in it? I was seriously considering getting one because the lightweight of my 637 .38 S&W is just not pleasant.

I think I have an equal number of .38's and .357's...four of each, oh hell, I may have five .38's. Anyhow, I carry a 4" Model 10 every day around the place as well as on trips to town. Lots of hogs, dogs, coyotes, and rattlesnakes out here. For this application, the .38 will do anything the .357 will, only in a lighter revolvers. The load I carry is a 158-ish gr. cast SWC running around 900 fps.  For social work I carry a soft cast 160 gr. SWCHP running almost exactly 1000 fps. If I felt the need for something heavier, it would be no big deal to handload a duplicate of Buffalo Bore's +P outdoor load which is a 158 gr. cast SWC running 1250 fps.

All else being equal, a gun that's chambered only for 38 Spl will be a bit lighter and more compact than one for 357 Mag.

1/10-inch (ish) shorter chamber means you can get away with a smaller (lengthwise) cylinder and frame, and the lower pressure of 38, even 38+P, than 357, means you can use less-strong but lighter materials for the cylinder and frame and not sacrifice safety or durability.

.357 mod 60. Light and fires .357 & 38. Best of both worlds

38 Special out numbers 357 Magnum three to one in my collection.  But I collect Model Tens so that distorts it a bit.

Were I going to get a SHTF/woods revolver I'd definitely get a Service sized .357 for ammo versatility.

For J-frames no thanks unless it's a very good deal over a .38.

My 360 disagrees with you.    Of course you look like this after shooting it with .357s.

I bought it with the idea of it replacing my 642 as my backpacking/hiking/kayaking/fishing gun but I still carry the 642 most of the time.  158gr SWCHP (and a round of CCI snakeshot if in water moccasin areas) will do pretty much anything I need an outdoor revolver to do (obviously not handgun hunting).  I've been around black bears, never worried about them.

Yes they are a couple of the Michigan State Police surplus 640's that Centerfire was selling a few years back. With the grips I have on it .38 Specials are pretty mild and .357's are stout but quite manageable. I have no problem going through a box of standard .38's and following up with half a box. of .357's. Only reason I stop at half a box of .357 is the price.

I have five 357's and one 38 special. The 38 is a 642 airweight that I carry in my coat pocket or on my ankle neither of which I want a heavier gun nor do I want to use a 357 in an airweight revolver. I'm not recoil shy as I have a number of .44 magnums. If I thought I needed a bit more than the 642, I would be caring a bit more in what I felt was an appropriate firearm.
