Mine has been very reliable and accurate. I know most everyone hates the trigger and replaces them with the Apex trigger kits, can it be done without getting the light strikes I've heard about?

No problem with mine, in my carry rotation.

I bought because it was cheap. <$200 Decent serviceable pistol. Glock has a better trigger IMO.

House guns and car guns.

Very affordable, if they are held for the duration of a defensive shooting investigation, it won't be missed.

If somehow lock boxes are breached and stolen... no major loss. (They all are secured one way or another to discourage theft).

They only thing I dislike about the trigger on mine is the actual trigger itself. The shape of it, particularly the tip, is uncomfortable after a few mags. The trigger pull is no worse than my Glocks, just different.

I've thought about replacing the trigger itself, but then I'd be paying for a part that costs a large percentage of the purchase price of the gun.

It's a fine pistol. For those that don't know, M&P sights fit it.

Thanks for your input all. I'm thinking more range time is in order, it's a house gun and I like it pretty well.

this is exactly why I chose inexpensive firearms for my car and normal carry.

People that carry expensive $1000 pistols are crazy.

I love mine.  Throw an Apex spring kit and trigger in there and the pull is on par or better than Glock, with better (for me) ergos.

I had one, started my gun trading run that lasted 3 years.  I now have 4 2.0s.  Good gun, glock "copy"

My daughters friend got one for Christmas.   Hes 20 so he told my daughter not to tell us.  He doesnt know what my hobby is yet.  Attachment Attached File

I dont want a super light trigger, personally.  I've got a man's hands and grip strength.

Before the recent panic, the rationale was m&ps weren't much more expensive.  Better pistol with more support.  Now, not so much (price difference).

The one I had was accurate and reliable---the trigger isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be and actually better than M&P 1.0 triggers.

If its all you can afford, you wouldn't be under armed.

I have one.  The trigger sucks, but I think it has better ergonomics than a G19, to be honest.

I had one years ago and sorry I sold it. The trigger,in my opinion, wasn't that bad. It was much better than the original version.

OP, I haven't heard anything about light primer strikes.  Is this a widespread issue?

I don't think you see much "love" for them because, let's be honest, they're in the "budget" category of pistols.  Reliable and useful, but nothing sexy about them.  I've handled some, shot some, and considered getting one when the prices were rock bottom as a spare 9mm, but ended up getting another Shield because I wanted a spare carry gun.

I've known a couple of people who installed the Apex upgrades, and I haven't heard anything from the small sample size about light primer strikes. Honestly, unless their some information out there about a technical problem, I'd probably chalk up internet posting about light primer strikes to incompetent users installing something wrong or incompetent users installing things right but also trying to "improve" the trigger with some Bubba gunsmithing.
Link Posted: 1/25/2021 2:16:14 PM EDT
[#14]
I don't know this for a fact so please take this with a large grain of salt, but the light primer strikes might be on earlier versions of the pistol. The reason I say this is that I had an early m&p 45 that had light primer strikes with the apex kit. Turns out the sear plunger size (if I remember correctly) had been made bigger in the newer versions of the pistol (still pre 2.0). I was able to change the housing and didn't have problems after that in the m&p

No problem at all once you replace the trigger.

Aesthetically I detest the two-tone look with the stainless slide and think they'd sell better in either all-black or all-FDE or something.

Smith should just jump on the bandwagon and make a SD9V3 that's a full gen 3 clone, except with a normal grip angle and slimmer grip that takes their existing magazines.

I got one when they were $250. Now they are $400~ no thanks. Not a bad gun. Trigger feels like a DA revolver, that's the "SD" part of the name, it has a long heavy Self Defense trigger. I shoot DA revolvers well, so I'm good with the trigger. When I first got it I thought it was an improvement over Glock, but now with gen 5 Glocks...

One big bitch I have is that there is very little aftermarket support for them. I was looking for extended mags or extended bases. Nope. Nothing. They must've sold a LOT of these when they were cheap. Why no aftermarket mags?
Here's my thread about the one mag extension I did find... Not good!
I've contacted strike industries and tried to get them to make extensions. My current CCW in a G45 with strike +6 extension. The SD would be nicer if it had that big of a mag.

I agree on the two tone look

I get if they had offered SD9VE pistols with FDE Cerakote or Wolf Gray Cerakote or whichever color was the tactical flavor of the day they would have sold more.

These days it probably doesn’t matter.  “Hammered babyshit” finishes would sell.

The father of a guy I work with bought two of them on a whim, one for him and one for his wife.  They took them out to the desert and shot them without ear protection, came home and told his son they were too loud and kicked a lot, LOL.

They gave them to him to sell which meant I had to help him.  I took one home to play with and thought it was pretty decent for the money but helped him sell them both.

Reliable gun.

But, pre-rona, the price difference between that and the M&P 2.0 was so negligible, you'd be foolish not to get a 2.0

This, been missing a custom g43 I had for 2 weeks, I didn't put a crap ton out for it but having it gone for the last 2yrs has sucked. Especially since it had zero to do with my investigation, it was just on my person at the time. I do not carry anything costing more than $500 street price because of this now. I'll put some money into sights and then a trigger if need be but that's it.

i got one in 40 and it was cheap and came with a holster and extra mags. I could not shoot it accurately with the original trigger and replaced with apex parts. I can shoot it accurately now. No regrets. Haven't shot it in years but it works and i like the grip angle and feel.

You waited 3 months to post that? I got one when it was $175 and wasn't worth it then and isn't worth whatever they are now.  At best it was good trunk gun, drop piece, or bugout bag gun.  I got rid of it.  Get yourself a $200 G2/G2C... they're the best cheap gun you can buy.  A $300 G3/G3C is slightly better.

Sigmas...

My SD9VE fits my hand like a glove. Trigger sucks but you get used to it maybe someday I'll Apex it.

I got it at local hardware store and I believe there might have been a $30 rebate. Store had a boatload of extra magazines for $16 each. Nowadays they're $40.

@Foggy1

Here's an alternative to the Apex stuff: M*Carbo (Military Carbine Brotherhood in Clearwater FL)

After watching this amazingly well-done video I purchased their SD9-40VE spring kit:

Striker spring
Safety block (plunger) spring
Trigger return spring
"assembly tool" (slave pin)

Reduces trigger pull weight to avg. of 4.75 lbs.

$19.95 no tax OTD with shipping was $25.90

Smith and Wesson SD9VE / SD40VE Trigger Spring Kit - S&W SD9VE Accessories

http://www.mcarbo.com

They also make a trigger spring kit for the older Sigma SW9VE and SW40VE models that they claim reduces the trigger pull by 50%.

Fine gun when they were $250-300 new.  They're $400 now, na.  I got one for my Bday about 5 years ago. I was out of the gun scene for so long I had no idea what it was.  I still have it as it's always been plenty reliable.  It's actually my nightstand gun and I stuck a TLR-3 on it.

Shame M&P mags don't fit.

I own its older, more hated brother the Sigma.

Zero problems with it and it's my nightstand gun with an old M3 light.

I'd have no problem buying a SD9VE if something were to happen to my Sigma.

I've owned a couple from time to time.

LOVE the grip and it's a natural pointing pistol for most folks.

Trigger is a Love / Hate thing.  It's not some custom 1911 glass rod breaking at 3lbs match trigger (But then again it wasn't DESIGNED to be light - it has significant resistance (like a Double Action Revolver) so they in high stress situations (Self Defense) a accidental discharge is less likely.

Magazines are available - it takes the M&P sights, so if you want Fiber Optic or Tritium sights they are easy to upgrade.

I am much more partial to the Nitrided black slide on black frame version than the "Two Tone" Stainless slide on Black frame.

Very Dependable pistols (in my experience) and a pretty good fit for it's most of it's intended users.

Acquired one that was captured in Astan.  Would sometimes get misfires with it.  Only had one mag, modified a new mag catch on plentiful M9 mags.  Those worked 100%, modified mags will still work in a Beretta.  Bottom of mag does extend out at an angle at the bottom of the grip however.

Have used multiple generations from the Sigma to the SD9VE, which was issued by federal contractor from ADF overrun purchase.

Sigma:  I wanted to like this gun. The LE rep for S&W came to our patrol station and talked this gun up as the American Glock...I don't care for Glocks but I've never had sights fall off, broken guide rods and bad mag springs all on the same gun on first range trip.  Mirrored by two other samples bought by LEO at same station (though their guide rods lasted beyond 1st trip). Thankfully only paid $225 but SW wouldn't refund.  Last money S&W has ever gotten from me.

SD9VE: 12 people at range training together with NIB pistols that had been cleaned and lubed. All were former mil and LE. Most had to go get their personal weapons because the pistols wouldn't last a mag without multiple FTF, FTE.  I am confident in saying 10 of the 12 were unreliable at best.  I personally had one break along the grip from the magwell up when I stepped off a large truck and bumped into a forklift.

ETA:so no one thinks I'm crapping all over budget guns, I go back and forth between a Mossberg MC1SC and XD9 Service for EDC, depending on wardrobe.  My EDC at the time I was working the contract was a Sig SP2340.  I'm not exactly a snob.

Good on you, guessing you’re one of the few that are still on the circuit, or still .mil. Back on topic, I had one officer carried one when we could carry personal weapons, that Sigma was junk, but he wasn’t a gun guy, he was a BOP hire, but I’m drifting off topic.  We had lots of BOPers that were great Inspectors.

But, I’m tempted to pick one up if the prices ever get back to normal, just because.

Good guns for house guns or to outfit every family member.
