I won this through a local auction last night. It's a S&W 696 (no dash), a 3", round butt, L-frame chambered in .44 Special, which holds 5 rounds. They were introduced in 1996 and discontinued in 2002. The 696-1 was introduced in 1997. The serial number shows it was built in 1997, so it was done just before the change to the -1.

Now, the hard part: my out the door cost-including buyer's premium and background check was $825.

Really neat gun.
I hope you reload, the world belongs to you if you reload .44 Spc.

Unfortunately, I have neither the time nor the space to reload. I'm a single working dad of two special needs kids in a 1,025 sq ft 2BR/2BA apartment. This is likely to be a safe queen for the foreseeable future. I don't have anything else in .44 SPL or .44 MAG. My other revolvers are either .22 LR, .22 WMR, .38 SPL, or .357 MAG.

Honestly, I didn't expect to win this one. I absolutely figured someone would outbid my ridiculously low bid. Nobody did, though, so now I have a fairly collectible gun at an unbelievably low cost.

Well if you shoot it, and I'd shoot the crap out of that gun , you can find pretty potent factory ammo up around 1000 fps with a 250 grain SWC, and of course much milder ammo abounds.
Either way, it's a very nice revolver.

I’ve bought at least 5 guns off Gunbroker this year the exact same way.
I’m happy with each of the guns since the prices were really reasonable but I’d have been happy if I’d gotten outbid too.

Nice looking revolver though, I always wanted a .44 Spl. since reading the old Elmer Keith stories in gun magazines.

Most 44 bullets have higher ballistic coefficients than most 41 and 45 bullets and that results in good penetration, even at lower velocities.

44 bullets are pretty much the ideal size.

That’s a 6-shooter, right?  …. The OP’s L-frame model is a 5-shooter.

This and OP's guns are beautiful pieces. I've never even heard of the 696. But now I want one.
I have a 624 Lew Horton and shooting it is just absolute fun. I think I even have some Buffalo Bore loads, but haven't tried them yet.

Look for a Lee Classic Loaders Kit in .44 Mag and get a washer .5" internal by .10" thick.  Then grab a set of Lee dippers.

Very nice gun. I bought one maybe 8-10 years ago the same way.  Bid about 700-800 bucks on GB and won it.

Mine was Mag-naported, which I like having done on all my guns so I was set from the start.

That plus a nice leather holster is my fancy BBQ gun.

I have the same gun. According to Smith the Magna-Porting on the no dash models was a limited factory run done for Lew Horton.

They are a nice carry revolver.
