Picked up a 686(no dash) in trade this morning, SN AEJ05XX. Wondering if anyone has a date chart they could check, not finding anything on google.
I did find info on a recall for cylinder binding, looks like this one wasn't sent in for the fix. Off to the range to try it out.Attachment Attached File

Ended up getting differing information. S&W told me 1986, but the date chart a member posted in another thread shows mid or late 1984.

Didn't take long for it to become one of my favorites.

The date charts are only an approximation.  Especially with the triple letter series.

Mid late 84 is correct

If you ask over at http://smith-wessonforum.com/ you will get someone that has the book and can look it up for you.

I'm jumping on this: What information does the dash convey?

My brother had a 4" 686-4 and I always wondered what the "-4" meant.

Long story short, revision number. A lot like M16, M16A1, etc.

Each dash number brought an "improvement" to the original design.

No dash is an early one, early 1980's

no dash sometimes have an "M" stamp to show it had the recall fix.

I had one, many years ago, and the did the "M" upgrade for free.

686 is a classic

I love them.

those grips are worth a pretty penny too.

Mine is a dash -4 that I had cut from 6" to 5" and 7 shot cylinder installed.

I like that-a lot! Best of the 4" and best of the 6" rolled into one. Mine is staying as-is except maybe for a gentle polish-but I do have a more recent 4" 686 that I think will be getting a trigger job and lock delete soon.
