Took my 1 day old new colt python 3" out today and after 4 rounds, I cocked the hammer back and it completely locked with a round ready to go. Using PMC basic .38.

I mean hammer was fully locked back, cylinder locked fully in place we couldn't do anything.  It was scary. With RO help, we held the hammer back, pulling the trigger and trying to open the cylinder. Eventually we got the hammer down and cylinder open.

So we gave one more chance (ugh) put 2 rounds in and it locked immediately as the hammer went back.  We did the same tedious process and got the hammer down and cylinder open , unloaded and put this thing away.

I never have experienced anything like this.  So dangerous too. Calling CS in the morning.  Anyone else???

Does it do it without any ammo in the gun?
If it works when empty, try another brand of ammo.

Works fine with no ammo. Tried 2 different boxes of .38 and same exact issue. To make sure it wasn't just ammo related. But I didn't want to try a 3rd time. Weird

Sucks. I do have to ask however, why did you load 2 more rounds after it locked up rather then try it with a empty cylinder?

Ah, I see that was answered while posting. Same ammo brand and lot number?

Sorry, emptied after the first issue. Then with no ammo, it worked fine again. Switched from PMC 132 gr, to PPU 158 gr. Same issue (lock up). Both work perfectly in my Smith and colt detective

I had a similar problem with my Model 27 many years ago*. There was unburned powder beneath the extractor which prevented the cylinder from turning. It was almost completely locked up!

*it was build while it was owned by some anti-gun company, I forget the name
IIRC it was AMC.

It's not locking up for some reason. I'd carefully examine the part that is supposed to lock the cylinder [goes into the cuts on the side of the cylinder] for burrs and the area around the FP for contact with the primer. Past that, send it back to Colt, a new revolver should not lock up.

Agreed. I just don't know enough to really diagnose.  I also Google searched and don't see any related issues on the new models. Very concerned with hammer locked back on a live round.

Get a video of the entire process: loading, firing, cocking, unloading, repeat. Do this till it locks up, then send the video to manufacturer. Or post it here; maybe someone will recognize the problem.

If it is open, check to see if the cylinder pin is tight.

I did get a short video for when I call customer support tomorrow.  With the hammer locked back and and cylinder stuck. Didn't get a full video of loading it , etc.

It was this that reminded me of my Model 27; cocking the hammer creates a substantial mechanical advantage, allowing you to lock the cylinder up. It acts as if the cylinder had suddenly grown a few thousands of an inch in length.
