I have a model 686(no dash) stainless, 6" barrel, full lug, fluted cylinder, with target sights.

I'm wondering when it was made and it's possible value.

I would like to find a .357 with a 3" or 4" barrel that I could actually carry.

Smith makes both K & L frames in 3" barrels, as does Colt these days. 3" is a LOT easier to carry, IMO.

One just like yours for $1,300.
