Put 50 midrange hand loads through my 624 tonight.  Just enough push to let you know you’re shooting a big bore but not even close to punishing.  I just shoot that gun so well.  It’s a 4” that had to go back to the mothership because of push off.  Trigger is NICE now.  I’ve also got a Lew Horton 24-3 3” RB that isn’t NiB but damn close.  Just an awesome cartridge and very nice to hand load for.  I stupidly sold a 4.75” Ruger stainless Blackhawk in 44 Special and I wish I still had it.

The 624:

She’s much dirtier right now.  I’ll take care of that later.

Years ago I almost bought a 21-4 at a relative bargain. Instead I got a 22-4 at a fair market value.

I like 45ACP better.

I don't shoot anything but standard .44 Specials in my M29-3. As the OP says, it has just enough thump to let you know it starts with 4 and no punishment while shooting it. Heartily agree.

Not sure what dash number mine is.  It’s from the classic series, nickel.

I also have a pair of Rossi 720s, a Ruger flat top Blackhawk, and a Uberti 1873 lever gun in 44 Special.  It’s second only to the 44 Mag as my favorite caliber, I 90% of the time I download the 44 mag to 1000 FPS anyway.

Mine is the US Marshal IT (Indian Territory) version, 18 inch saddle ring carbine.  I didn’t care about US Marshal stuff, but it is a great little levergun in the right caliber. Now I need to find some more round nose bullets, it doesn’t like to feed Keith bullets. I really need to get my ‘Smith to fix it where it does feed Keith bullets.

I cast and loaded 255 gr. SWC's from an RCBS 44-250KT mold and these bullets feed pretty much flawlessly, BUT they're profile is a little different than most Keith type bullets.

This one came out of an unlucky buck. You can see the base of the front of the bullet is larger in diameter which makes a less pronounced shoulder than on most Keith bullets.

I had some handloads with a true Keith bullet, they wouldn’t feed at all without single loading them into the chamber.  I had some others that were kind of a short nosed SWC, I could jiggle the lever and get them to feed.  Then I tried some aluminum case blazer ammo with a jacketed bullet, these fed like butter but are scarce and expensive.

I only have two 44 Specials left.  A Ruger Lipseys Blackhawk from a decade ago and one of the Smith M24's from the eighties. I had decided to keep more of my 44 Magnums when I'd been selling stuff off in recent years.  However, I wished I'd have keep a few more of the M24's and M624's I owned as I really enjoy reloading and shooting the 44 Special as well.  Its a very rewarding cartridge as it doesn't seem to take a lot of effort to achieve accurate loads

It isn't though.  I some times wish I had mine back.

Now, if you load it like some did back in the 80s, it might be a little bit painful, but those kinds of loads are hard on that kind of a gun.

Factory loads and reasonable handload duplications thereof actually work quite well.

What load and slugs?  The factory .44spl I bought was as boring as shooting a .38, except for much more expense.  At least I have the shells to re-stuff, but I want them to have some snap.

Used to have this:

Then I got this:

And promptly sold the 624 Lew Horton. Neat gun, collectible, but just not as much utility as the first-gen Mountain Revolver (which is also collectible). .44 Special is a great round, but the option to use .44 Magnum (even if painful) is a nice feature.

My first love is a model 28 that a friend built for me about 45-50 years ago.(and , yes, I still have it.) he found a 6 inch .44 special barrel in the white and very rough, but marked. I gave him a smith model 28 and he bored the cylinder to .44 spects. cleaned up the barrel, did a trigger job on it, and reblued the whole thing. we put it in a Ransom rest at the range and it shot a 1 1/2 group at 50 yards. that was the only way to get a .44 special in those days. it will be the last  gun of mine that I'll sell. I pour my own bullets and I'm using a round top, flat top 6 hole Lee mold now. and I powder coat my bullets. I load for about 900-1000 FPs OR  there abouts. at my age I don't shoot any thing that hurts, the trigger still breaks at about 3.5 lb.s after all these years.  I have replaced the firing pin(on the hammer) once(and no, I don't dry fire much at all.) but it is the gun I use to show friends that I can still shoot a revolver, the rest of them are for playing(well, not really,) thanks Garry Dean

I’ve got about 300 210gr SWC bullets left over from 20+ years ago.  I’m loading them with 5gr of HP-38.  Enough juice to keep it interesting but not super heavy.  I’ve also been loading ACME 240gr coated SWC’s over 7.5gr of Herco.  I’m pretty deep on LPP’s so I’m loading a lot of 44 Special and 45 ACP at the moment.  The HP-38 and Herco are ancient as well.  I’ve got plenty of new stuff but I figured I’d use the old stuff.  Still works fine.  25 year old Winchester LPP’s as well.

For the record, Dillon 550 and RCBS dies.  44 Special is just such a sweet round to reload.

I don’t know why it’s not as popular. Maybe because Unique has been around longer. Another reason is probably confusion about the name. It used to be called Universal Clays. Now it’s just Universal.
The loading data is so close to Unique’s you might as well say they are interchangeable. Universal is just a tad quicker burning so most of the data shows the max loads a tenth or a grain or two less than Unique’s max loads. It meters a lot better than Unique which is why I switched.
