Browsing at the LGS, I see this 629-4 (bottom in pic) in the pre-owned section. I’ve never had a 44 mag, but I have an informal policy to buy any pre-lock SW revolvers with even halfway reasonable prices that I come across.

SCSW sez approx mfg of 1995 and it’s pre-MIM and pre-lock. $700 isn’t exactly a steal, especially without the right box or papers, but I’ve paid more for guns that I like less.

Thought I’d share and ask for any hive wisdom on this model. Other owners’ feedback?

With it’s older sibling, a no-dash 686 (top).

I 'think' that's the mountain gun with the tapered barrel. Designed to "be carried all day and shot a little" or so they say.

I have a 6" 629 and love it with reduced 44 mag loads. Looking for a decent 4" version.

You can always shoot .44 specials through it and enjoy it that way.  I think the tapered barrels are handsome.  I like the mountain gun.  Here's a drawing I did of one:

My 629 Mtn Gun was tearing my thumb on the cylinder latch until I put on the Hogue grips like the .500 uses. They seem to be just a bit wider; that tamed it for me. In addition the chamber throats were too tight, so like my DW744 I reamed the chamber throats and recut the forcing cone. It is fine now, but I wouldn't want to shoot a bunch of high octane ammo through it in one sitting, but I'm sure it is much better in this regard than the aluminum framed .44.

629 Mountain Gun, highly desirable.

Hint, you don’t HAVE to shoot full bore 44 Magnum loads all the time.

Lol, thanks! I've accepted shooting .38sp out of my 686 for longer range sessions and plan to have a similar approach with this one!

Exactly what I do.  I have two 629 Mountain Guns, my all time favorite firearms of any kind.

As others said, a Mountain Gun in best 629. Worth every penny of the $700, very desirable.

OP, my 629-4 says "Mountain Gun" on the right side of the barrel, is yours marked?

Mine has an unfluted cylinder.

I see yours has the older style forged cylinder release button, so earlier than mine.

Yes, it's marked but it's very faded. You can barely make out the "44 Magnum" markings on the left side; the "Mountain Gun" markings are even more faint. The gun is in good shape but it wasn't pampered. I love the unfluted cylinder and plan to include that in future acquisitions.

Maybe yours was a special run? I studied the mountain guns intently and all the ones I had seen were fluted cylinder models.

Altamont grips/stocks on these? I think mine has the OEM Hogue piece, which is superbly functional but I don't love the look. Might upgrade to something nicer like yours.

If you plan to shoot it much, definitely consider reloading.  .44 Magnums or Specials are both expensive.  Unless you're accustomed to shooting heavy recoiling pistols, with magnum loads, you'll have a hard time shooting it accurately.  Moderate lead reloads cost much less and are a joy to shoot.

Whichever way you go, enjoy a classic revolver.

Great score OP for the money.  Mountain guns are getting harder to find.  I load my with 240 grain hard-cast bullets over some WC820.  I added a SDM (http://sdmfabricating.com/ )fiber optic front sight and new rear sight which I can not recall the manufacturer,   The loads perform well as it's a penetration load.  I carry it on Western hunts as a back up.  I really don't see too much difference in recoil compared to my 6" Anaconda or other 44's in my stable with the exception of my S&W 629-6 Performance Center 2 5/8".

Enjoy your new pistol.

Here's mine on a elk hunt in the Big Horn Mountains in Buffalo WY.

I do not have that exact revolver, but I do have a modern 629 4" 44 magnum. I'll say that is can be a handful with hot 44 magnum rounds. Hell, it can be a handful with normal 44 magnum rounds. It is a joy to shoot with 44 spcl though.

Like others have said, if you look hard enough, you can buy 44 magnum/spcl for about $25/box...but that's still $.50/rd. I'm looking to getting into reloading just for this gun as well as my .38 spcl revolvers. I'd shoot myself out of house and home running factory ammo in those loads.

Cool drawing JJ! I always thought the S&W tapered bbls look soooo sexy.
I would have certainly snatched that up for 700 bucks provided lock-up was still pretty tight.

I have a 629-4 Mountain gun - great revolvers - has all the S&W strength updates and retains the hammer mounted firing pin.

$700 is a good price for that revolver.

Last time I took them to the range I compared my 4" magna ported 29-5 to the lighter mountain gun - really felt pretty much the same recoil wise.

I have a Mtn Gun and a Night Guard which is a snubby version of the 329PD, so comparatively recoil isn't so bad on the mtn gun...

I did put the 500 SW grips on the Night Guard, it made shooting full power 240gr loads bearable.  But 300gr is still too much even with the grips.
