If you lived in a ban state, and had to pick a full size pistol, what gun and in what caliber?
Ohio
I lived in NY and moved 12+yrs ago. First handgun I bought was a G23, four days after I moved here. |
In 2013 when Connecticut went with a 10 round magazine law. I went from a Glock 19 to a Commander 1911.
The Commander is about the same size as the Glock. Fires 45 acp, so a bit more power. Mag can hold 7 or 8 and one in the chamber, so I don't lose that much. I have a few all steel Colt commanders, But for the last year I have been packing a Ruger lightweight CMD commander. The Alloy frame is very light and recoil still isn't bad. |
Single stack 45 or 10mm of choice. Sig p220 would be one of my first thoughts if we are talking about 10 rounds or under.
What's the role for? Nightstand gun? Range toy? Deep woods gun?
Nightstand would be P320 in 45 ACP, with a good light. Range toy and possible carry if allowed? 1911 in 45 ACP or 9x19. Deep woods? G20 because best mm. |
From my safe that would be either my 1911 in .45 ACP or Smith 58 4" .41 Mag.

shield 9mm with extended mags. about as small as you can get and still have max capacity.
also a full size 1911 in 45acp if I didn't super care about printing, and probably a CCO sized 9mm if I did. Glocks/M&P full size/other double stacks beat 1911s on capacity. If you can't utilize that there's really no reason to stick with them. |
I would probably get into a P220 or similar. Then again I have always wanted one on S&W's 8 shot 357 wheel guns. The one with the rail.

You choice of Glock with 10rd mags. Personally I like the G19

Some people want more info or clarification..... in NY there can be multiple judges in the same county who all decide what they will and wont approve. Many counties dont restrict you, some do, some have a magic limit on how many pistols you can have. This can be a judges personal rule not a written one. For the sake of this imagine you are limited to 3 pistols and or revolvers

Actually I did just that... and the irony I guess is that both guns I bought after I moved to a free state were both NY compliant... Ruger SP101 and Sig P238. At least the SubGun isn't - but only because the mags it takes are considered "high capacity" since two hold 10 rounds and two hold 12... Oh and the revolver is a 357 and the Sig is a 380. Of course the caveat is that I'd have to get new home-defense ammo... IIRC, NY doesn't like when the subjects to the crown are using safety rounds (hollowpoint). |

Being a NY resident we have a 10 round limit. Full size pistols then lose most of their appeal since the added capacity is irrelevant so Glock 19/23 etc size guns are "perfect" imo
When I lived in NY I went with a Glock 19 because, at the time, "pre-ban" standard-capacity mags were still legal. That meant the 19 or a Sig P226 were the obvious choices due to pre-1994 magazine availability. That's a moot point now with the 10 round limit. If I were to start over in NY now I would go through an entirely different selection process. That won't be necessary, however, since I moved to a free state. (The SAFE Act convinced me to leave.)

if it's only 3 pistols total to own, I would do shield 9mm, STI 2011 9mm, and a full size 1911 in, honestly and I hate to say it, 9mm. may as well standardize.
The subcompact shield is good EDC, and you can always add an extension to get it up to full capacity. The 1911 is iconic and I like them, and they shoot well. The 2011 is my choice for a do-all 9mm, competition, HD, carry when you don't care about printing, etc. Of course, I would get and keep a few mag kids that bump it up to 23 rounds but not use them. they would be for SHTF. if there's a major issue and we're at that point, ain't nobody keeping track of how many rounds are in my magazine. |

Glock 17, we're still allowed preban high caps, they're just expensive and hard to find.

I'm pretty happy carrying 9 rounds in my 1911. Ban state or not.
I'd do just the same as I do now and just roll a G43
That said, I'd love a justification to carry my S&W 10 or 19 more besides just feeling cool. Man I'm glad I left CT though |
Depends on what it is for. Full sized 1911 with 10 round mags gives you the max capacity with heavy hitting rounds, but I can tell you from experience that it gets heavy as hell to carry on a daily basis. So, if it is a nightstand gun, I would go that route and buy one with a rail to put a light on and call it a day. If it is a carry gun, I wold probably go the glock 43, XDS or M&P route. You could get to 8+1 in 9mm. If you want to carry it and still have more shootability, a G19 will give you more grip and a slightly longer barrel.

Glock 19 with 10 round mags are pretty common as are Glock 43s
I picked a CZ 97 B. .45 ACP. Because I wanted it, not because I had to.

Coonan .357 auto pistol with several of the older 8 rd mags. 8+1 of 125gr JHP at 1450 fps, whats not to love I did carry a Coonan Model B for years in Kentucky.

If I cared about following the rules, I would have gone with a 1911 when I lived in California. But I never gave two shits about the law, especially after my sheriffs dept said I didn't have "good enough cause" to carry. Carried my G19 or S&W 642 religiously and just prayed to God I never got frisked cuz I wasnt gonna go to prison for bullshit like that.

View Quote To be fair, my balls didn't drop til I was stationed in TX and discovered 2A. Before that I was just a typical "guns are cool" type kid who liked guns but had never honestly considered owning one. And anything is grounds for medical weed in CA lol |

I would be comfortable with 10 rounds in my full size G17 with Heinie Slant Pros, and a reload or so
for a smaller carry pistol (which is my daily carry in a right to carry state) a G43 with a Pearce +1 and a TT +2 on the reload |
Boy, I've been carrying my s&w m19 the last couple weeks. In a state I could conceivably conceal anything.
Doing good Attached File Plus a speed loader and 2 speed strips |
Glock 17 for size and comfort at home. Glock 19 for away from home, and a Glock 43/ shield/ sig 938 for deeper concealment.
When I live in Kalifornistan I carried an alloy framed 1911.
About the only time I'd recommend a 40...
Glock23 and a shield in 40. Get 10 riunders for the Glock. If you ever move, you can get normal capacity mags and just keep rolling. Or standardize and get a 1911 in 45. I find a 1911 easier to carry than a g19. Even either the weight. It feels flatter and easier to conceal. |
Its not full size but my 19 with 10’rounders. But if it had to be full size id go back to a gov length 1911 with wilson 8 rounders.

Oh giving options for 3 guns certainly changes things:
Sig P355- carry gun S&W 1911 PD- range, HD w/ light carry in cooler months if you wanted S&W M&P 45c- would probably go with the compact as you could use 8-rd mags if you were carrying or 10-rd for HD and spares. This could serve for carry or HD in place of the 1911 and if it was limited to 2 would be the other fun I’d go with along with the P365. |
Smith and Wesson M&P .45, ten rounds plus one. The no Brainer Choice.

A judge setting a limit upon how many handguns you can own, after you tolerating up to a year to get a permit to buy even the first one, should be grounds for removing that judge from the bench.
I can't believe that no one has challenged that in the courts and had it struck down. To answer your question, I wouldn't choose a full sized gun. Basically, as during the Federal ban when smaller guns became really popular, I'd pick something like the Glock 27 If you're limited to only three handguns, that model covers enough bases that it should suit you well. |
