Call me simple minded, but this is the pinnacle of what I want in a 1911. Classic lines with some modern flare.

I’d suggest looking for a gun with the desired mods standard. May cost more initially but mods are damn expensive   Parts, labor and shipping. Adds up crazy fast. Even the most trivial mod will start at $100. Manufacturers have tons of models with a huge range of choices.  $1500 base plus a very few mods and your well over $2k.

Either that, or just order a full custom from scratch that some builders offer. No point to buy $1500 gun and add mods.

Lol, what's your definition of full custom?

Because a $4000 custom is going to be a whole damn lot more expensive than a Springfield Loaded that's been checkered, a barrel fit, and some bar stock parts thrown at it.

If I was wanting a basic 1911 today to mod, that /\ (Colt 01911C) would be my choice. Only slight negative is the laser engraving. I would try very hard to find one that was actually roll marked (some were released with rollmarks). Not a show stopper by any means, just a personal preference.

Just my opinion, I would never buy mid tier pistols (like Dan Wesson, SA TRP...) and spend more money to replace good functional parts and add other features. It will be easily add thousands when one try to go full out. Full custom means build either using your quality bare bone slide/frame (Colt 1911C, SA Milspec etc) or the custom 1911 smith can source it for you. So it make more sense to get the basic slide / frame to begin with (Colt, Springfield, Caspian....). Not high-end semi-custom like WC, NHC, EB, ACW.

Also go full custom doesn't mean you will need to spend $4000. Custom 1911 by default would be expensive (no double). But it could be utilitarian 1911 that will not cost more than semi-custom gun and allow you to truly build to your specs.

It started out as a plain old 70 series nickel-plated Government model. And I customized it the way I wanted it by just putting a new top end on it , the combat Government model, and a few drop in parts.
The nickel plated slide and Associated Parts I put on a Norinco frame and sold it. It paid for most of the upgrades.

My favorite shooter.... Nighthawk Warhawk.45

I just got a dan wesson vigil and for the money it's amazing, its one of the nicest 1911s I've had under $3000

It didn't take a lot of modification:

A used DW Valor, or Specialist, which has all the basic stuff, checkering, good sights and quality parts you need already on it, or for the same reason, a used Baer UTC or TRS.

All other add ons or custom touches are bumfluffery. Which is fine, but for your $1500 budget, look for a used gun where the owner has already dumped all the money into it.
Baer was $1200

DW Valor- previous owner DLC'd it $1300

DW Valor- $1200 sent to J Reid for some added work:

I've been modding my GW Guardian. I've done sights and about 87 trigger jobs! I'm having fun with it and just picked up another Guardian.

I have 4, all slightly different. If I had to choose 1 in your price range it would be the Springfield TRP or Colt Wiley Clapp Government.

5” no rail in .45.

I don't carry a 1911 but I did mod my RIA GI model. Installed a better sear and spring and bobbed the hammer which bit me, then had better sights installed by Heinie. Even installed the dual spring recoil system from the M45A1. Never had a single problem with it.

Colt.  Both started out stock. Doug Jones did all the work.  They replaced my 69 C series that I used to carry all the time.

My utilitarian USMC MEUSOC clone built by Springfield Custom Shop. Total cost with the gun and build charges was about the same as most entry semi-custom 1911 (SACS, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Wilson).

SA Loaded.

I went the Milspec route and had to:

Change hammer/trigger/sear
Add and fit beavertail
Get slide cut for Novak sights
Buy Novak sights
Refinish

All of which could have been avoided by just buying the Loaded

So if you could only have 1, 45acp, and wanted to carry/shoot/and modify some.

Which would you choose?
View Quote

OP says one, and that it must be a .45ACP

So far it has handled every type of ammo I have put through it, including semi-wadcutters.
Weights from 185gr to 230.

Yes, it is heavy-ish and more difficult to conceal, but OP said one......

If OP allows two pistols and another caliber.
9x23
Built by myself by "throwing some parts at it".

Neither of these have come close to OPs budget, including multiple magazines for both, holsters and 1000 rounds of ammo in each caliber.
