My P226 JJ= 1988  I was a freshman in high school!

[Last Edit: BuddyChryst] [#4]
I was unable to find any of the markings mentioned on my P229.  There are no marking on the underside of the slide.  I changed the grips out to Hogue wrap-around rubberized grips, and can't at the moment find the originals.  Found the owners manual...would've thought they'd be right there with it...

Anyway, as best as I researched quickly, the P229 sold in the US was not assembled in Germany.  So I guess the letter codes do not apply?  The only mark other than the serial # on the barrel I found was a small "P" (no circle) on the side of the protrusion that the guide rod and recoil spring rest.  I did check the mags the pistol shipped with and they were stamped '94.  Was that the first year the P229 was out or was it released in '93?

EDIT:  based on the link on the sigforum (http://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/430601935/m/467100822) it appears the two letters that start the serial number do, in fact, indicate the year...or at least closely correspond.  The pattern is lost by "AM."  My serial number starts "AD" which appears to be standard for the 1994 year.  Going back means AC is '93, AB is '92 so AA would be '91 (just as .40 cal came out).  But according to this article:
http://averagejoeshandgunreviews.blogspot.com/2008/06/sig-p229-9mm-one-of-most-popular-and.html
the P229 wasn't released until 1992 and only in .40 cal.

The serial prefix and proof stamping are two totally different things.  There is a pic of the proof stamping on page 1 of this thread by Growler67.  AD would actually be 03 (also in Growler's post).

IIRC, the P229s did not have proof marks––only 100% German guns did.  If they did, you would find it on the slide, under the barrel, on the "dust cover."

According to the SigForum link, the prefix AD does make it a 94 gun.

The "P" with a circle on the barrel is the barrel proof.  Something Sig no longer does.

You have a rare gun from back when Sig make great pistols––congrats!

i just got a 220 with the rail yesterday. There was a bit of rust on the slide and no "stainless" engravings. Says made in germany with no other engravings other than the serial number and "Sig Sauer sigarms inc exeter NH" on left side slide.

The grips have an 03 with arrow pointing to "9".

Serial number is G 359 xxx

It also has the internal extractor.

Any links to a 220 FAQ?

Your's is probably an American assembled Sig.  There are no proof marks on them.

So that means you have to call in for a manufacture date?

Interesting that Sig doesn't use an "I" in their date code, while HK doesn't use a "J".  Otherwise they're the same A=0, B=1.....

Well I called Sig because I dont have any markings on my new pistol the only thing I could find 10 02 in the inside of the grips again, when asked by sid for the serial number he told me it was made before 05. then he said if I want toe certificate of birth it will be 50 bucks from Germany. prices have gone up.

My P-229 .40 says "made in Germany" on the right side of the receiver and slide is stainless. No marks under the slide
but the serial number is AE418** so I am assuming 1995. All 5 of my mags are marked "restricted to law enforcement only".
The little clock on the mags are "98".

She's in nice shape and shoots great!

Cool thread.

My 228 has HK stamped along with the proof marks, so it was born in 1997. And, the slide is stamped Made In Germany.

I have one of the PW Imports ex-Swiss police P226s, and it doesn't have any date marking anywhere other than under the grips. The right side of the slide has the import " Germany PW Arms Redmond WA" slide and the serial number, but nothing else. It's got the big milled stainless slide, too. The left side of the slide has the company and model stamp, as well as the Gendarmerie Vaud crest.

The frame has the German "cockroach" proof-mark on it, as well as the serial #. Did the milled slides come from Germany or were they an American product first? The date on the underside of the grips say 5/98 so I can get a ballpark-figure on when it was made.

EDIT: I found the original ad for this gun on GunsAmerica today while looking at other P226s! The ad states that the serial number range puts the manufacture date at 1996, so the grips could be later add-ons. A previous owner got a little happy with the aluminum black on the frame, but that's not a concern to me. This is one of the ex-police Sigs that either the importer or wholesaler had sent off to Black Ice for a slide refinish. This is odd to me, as it's not a stamped slide, and aren't the milled ones stainless? What sort of finish did the milled slides have on them back in the mid-90s? Since Black Ice did the slide I may send the frame off to them for a refinish, since it's only $45.

My box has a red foam liner too. the gun is extremely accurate too I agree with the "cans all 25 yard all day" statement these 220's rock.

Swiss made 225.  No date code.  Under grip is circle with 82 and two dots.  One at 12:00 and 1:00, maybe Feb 82.

Proofmark is backwards capital 'B' with a capital 'P', sharing the vertical line.

Just bought (haven't picked up though ) a P220, W German marked slide with a KC date code (1992). I hope I am welcomed in the cult of Sigs.

First foreign pistol I have owned since my disastrous G27 experience, but I am not worried, you know the Germans make good stuff.

I just did a trade for a P226 and have no idea of it's age.  It has no markings under the slide, the serial starts in UU 645xxx, has a rail and came in a blue box. It also has night sights that are starting to dim, but do not say Siglite.  I cannot make out the markings on them.  Been searching all over the net and keep coming up empty.  Not sure when they started having rails on the frame or when the blue boxes were used. Anyone have a ballpark guess of the age?

Sig stopped making slides in mid 1995 with the West Germany markings. In the beginning the stamped out the W. on the slides and then bagan to leave it out when they used up all of the premarked slides.

Here is the progression of SIG boxes & Cases which would make yours an early 2000's if the case is correct. Call SIG to see if they can give the actual date. FYI, they started keeping a computer database in 2005.

Color Coded Boxes mid - late 80's
Gray plastic cases mid - late 90's
Blue plastic cases early 2000's
Black Cases same shap as blue cases late 2000's
Current smaller black cases 2010's to present

SIG also used cheap boxes for some period of time in the 2000's-2010's
