I'm trying to breathe some life into my old xdm 40. I figured I'd use it as a camp/woods gun from time to time when I feel I don't need the .44. my question is what are some hot commercial fmj ammo choices out there if ammo like Buffalo bore isn't readily available.

Not sure if it's still made, but I have some Speer Gold Dot 155 grain .40 ammo that feels very stout in my Beretta 96 Compact.    I've fired different loads from 135 to 180 grains, and none of it felt close.   Some of the hot stuff from Cor-Bon or Buffalo Bore might be faster, but I'm talking about common .40 ammo you can buy anywhere.

EDIT... 155 grain GDHP is no longer produced.   Its now a 165 grain bullet.   No idea how it stacks up with the 155 stuff

Trying to hot-rod .40 ammo into real 10mm territory leads to --------------------> KABOOM!

Just get a 10mm, and be done with it. Safe and simple.

Look for 155 gr ammo. Winchester Silvertip was my go to but they just discontinued it.  look at the energy levels of your possibles or load your own.

Forget the 180 stuff it sucks in actual field use against live targets ( at least the Win Ranger 180 sucks).

Get the underwood 200gr hard cast.  As good as it gets for woods carry in 40

You can get 180's at 1,100 fps in .40 S&W.

That's only 150 fps below standard 10mm stuff- and a reason the 10mm is silly (if you already own a .40). Shit, most of factory 10mm stuff is at .40 velocity!!

If Buffalo Boar and Underwood are out the question...like the OP states, MOST 10mm ammo you can buy at any big box retailer is within 100 fps of .40 S&W.
