They allow you to backorder at a reasonable price (by today's standards). Has anyone been doing this with them?

Idk if id do back order in this climate. No clue if or when it will get to you.

The only reason I'm considering it is because it locks in a lower price.

I placed an order for some 9mm ball two weeks-ish back. Supposed to ship "in 21-30 days" so I won't know what the deal is for another week at minimum - and my guess is it'll end up being longer than 30 days if I'm honest.

Here's where I'm at with 9mm ammo: if I can find it for under 40cpr shipped from a reasonably reputable website, I'm buying it. I know Optics Planet isn't loved around here but they always end up sending what you paid for, so I dont mind waiting a bit longer in this case. Seller's market if ever there was one.

Took 3 weeks for 150 rounds of 45 LC.
That’s less than half the time they estimated it would take to get it.

The back order systems at least places you in line at a known price.  The current prices are always dragging the new normal upward.  Sucks yes.  Avoidable no.  Worsening yes.  ChinaJoe and CommieVanilla are really going to screw you in a few months.

Its like commodity futures.  Lock in the minimum amount you need, cancel if available cheaper sooner, but get something.

Before the 2012 election, I backordered a case of CCI .22s.  It took CCI three years to catch up manufacturing on their allocated production commitments, vendor by vendor.

The case was delivered in the early fall of 2015 at the 2012 price.

I'd avoid optics planet in general. Ordered another MRO and scalar works mount from them in the beginning of Oct. Both items showed in stock and they sent an email stating the order was processing. Eight days later after no status change I tried calling, impossible to get a person so sent an email got a vague response about covid delays to shipping. I ordered from another vendor, couple days later I had a new MRO from the other vendor. Still nothing from optics planet so I tried calling multiple times and sent two more emails. The last email asking for a hard delivery date or a refund. The next day I got an email saying my order was cancelled with no explanation a little over a week later my account was credited. The items I ordered showed in stock on their website the entire time.
Optics planet used to be slow and unresponsive but the selection was good and the prices were about middle of the road. Now they're just looking to make money off loans from anyone silly enough to give them money. YMMV but I'd be a bit leery unless you just want to park some money in their account

I know a guy...

He ordered some 9mm at a good price on backorder, supposed to ship in 30 days (or something like that).  He just got a notice it would be another 30 days and gave him the option to cancel.  I suspect he will get another 30 day deferral in 30 days.

Thanks for posting this.

The day of the post, CCI Blazer 40 LRN in 50 boxes, 100=5000 round case, was $3.39 each box when backordered.  Dropped the hammer on that one.  (Even though roughly twice normal.)

Now, a few days later, the BO price is $4.99 per 50.  You “saved” me $160.  (No deal at $4.99, three times normal.)

Question:

Does anyone know what this new Blazer 38 grain LRN in boxes and bulk paks is???

I've been placing back orders for ammo with them since the apocalypse started, so far the ammo has trickled in. They do ship items separately as they arrive and don't actually capture funds until the items ship, although they will place an initial hold on the funds which will drop off after a few days. I'd say it's cool if you aren't in a hurry and go in knowing that the items they list as "In-Stock" are probably going to be on backorder. If you need something ASAP they probably aren't the place to go. FWIW, some of the items I've ordered have arrived before the estimated date and some have been pushed back further.

Update: my order from roughly a month ago has been delayed with a new estimated delivery by mid January. Just got an email today about it.

This is a Winchester issue, not an Optics Planet issue. I knew it was backordered when I bought it so im not stressing over the wait and figured this would be coming.

Ordered 2 boxes of win m855 62grn green tip for two buddies for Christmas.
200 rnds per box max two boxes.

They are ammo poor. Cost was 220 shipped only took a week and a half to get.
Just arrived Thur the 19th. ( ya 400 rnds 220 bux and now ya know why i reload)

Should be some cool looks on their faces ammo is the last thing they expect to get.

Eventuality OP will get you your stuff sometimes it just takes forever.
Best to check the lime green notice as to if in stock or approx shipping delay times.

The win ss109 was instock when i ordered it.

I ordered 3 boxes of 300 blackout on August 19. About 5 weeks later they shipped 1 box. 2 weeks ago they sent a second box. Last box is estimated February 2021.

Same. I'm just treating it as a sunk cost at a reasonable price given the current market. If it gets pushed back past mid-year, ill cancel it and move on.

I backordered with them once... 30 days later I was told it was going to be 2 weeks...  3 days after that email, THEY canceled my order, even tho I had opted to wait.

Don't think that just because you've got something backordered with them, that you'll get it, or get it at a "locked in" price.

They have a sketchy reputation for a reason.  They earned it.

Ordered some .380 in November. Supposed to ship in 14 days.

They sent me 3 or 4 order updates since then, pushing the date back and offering (encouraging?) me to cancel.

It’s now estimated to ship 5 May, but I wouldn’t bet the ranch on it.

For the most part the CC agreements prohibit this.

Orders for custom work can be billed when placed.

Orders for merchandise are restricted to being posted when shipped by the vendor.
If they get caught violating this there use of CCs can be terminated.

Good to know.

That being said, when I have ordered ammo from them they bill my card, and it stays in "pending" for a few days then drops off.

Other vendors definitely bill when the order goes in, not when the order ships.  I'll have to look at my CC agreements and see what i can learn there.

As of today I have 13 orders (almost all ammo) that are backordered from Optics Planet and an order I placed on July 31st was shipped yesterday. Yes even in normal times OP can be slow at shipping but I have bought a bunch of items from them and their prices are usually hard to beat..almost always get 10-15% discounts and free shipping even on ammo before the shortage.

I have never had my credit card billed or even billed and credited and never charge me until it ships. I have no idea when the next order will be shipped but I am willing to wait with 9mm price locked in at .21 per round and 5.56 at .43 a round. Even with all my backorders I've never had OP cancel any order and they do send email updates letting me know of more delays.

I do believe those that have had bad experiences with OP but in my case they get an A+ from me.

Here is a tip that might help some in the future....when placing an order with OP and there are multiple items in the order OP will wait for all items to be available before shipping the entire order. You can ask for shipping of a partial order and sometimes they have did that for me but more often not. Once I figured out they must have all items in stock before shipping I deleted some items in each order so there was only 1 item and that seemed to get items to me sooner.

This order was shipped yesterday and it is 1000 rounds...5 boxes x 200
