Given the increasing scarcity and rising prices of ammo like Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, and Hornady Critical Duty, I recalled seeing a vid a while back saying that this type of ammo is only marginally better than the WWB braned “defense” ammo. This article discusses the video

Honestly, give me any 124 grain or heavier hollow point in 9mm and I wont sweat it.

Barnes Tac XPD, Winchester Ranger (T-Series of Bonded), Remington Golden Saber Bonded, Winchester White Box 147gr all appear to be viable alternatives. 5pins, a member here, does testing all the time that shows some promise with some loads you probably otherwise wouldn't consider (147gr WWB JHP being one). Personally, I carry 124gr Gold Dot as it is my duty load and I can get a lot of it free from work.

Ever think of Underwood? They use XTP and GD bullets.

Yes. Usually those are pricey. Wish Leihi would be cheaper. Some South African company makes some nasty rounds too but they cant export

I would probably look at Golden Sabers or 9BPLE.

You're not going to find any HP ammo for 30 cpr.

Last time I bought HST I paid $20 or so for 50...so 40 cpr. However, those days are over...I think most are asking $30+ for 50 rounds....if you can find them.

Shop around, but I bet the best you do is 40 cpr for any HP ammo.

You can still get 124 gr GDHP's (+P or regular) for $0.48 per round, plus shipping, if you know where to look. If anyone wants the link, shoot me an IM. I am not connected to the vendor in any way, but I don't want to post it publicly, lest Vista catch wind and crack down on them like they've done other vendors.

Fair warning, the vendor has a flat rate shipping of $15 per 50 pounds. The more boxes you order, the better the per round shipping cost. I just went to their website and it let me put 33 50-round boxes into my cart with the same $15 flat rate shipping charge. (Those 1650 rounds would have cost $806.67, shipped, or $0.489/round.

Those of us that have been around for a while remember other times when some/all types of ammo got scarce. I remember when ATK tightened up their regs before, maybe 15 years ago. That's why I have so much stocked away. If you are new to the ammo world, shop around and you will find what you need. It's much much easier than pre-internet days of gun shops and gun shows. Pay whatever you must for a few hundred HST. Then patiently look for sales or the possibility that things will loosen up again.

In 9mm, ammo selection is more important than the other calibers.

Your tests are great. Any plans to test performance through Auto Glass of sheet metal? Auto Glass replicates bone very well and most of of spend a bit of time in cars (1 hour+ to work for me)

I think as long as it functions reliably and expands thrugh clothing pretty well and penetrates 12+ inches it will be fine.

I think the trick is to look for deals and just buy a crapton of HST or whatever you want on sale. But you can buy something else too obviously.

I think XTPs do pretty well overall.
