I have two S&W Model 28s that have issues.  Both seem to have similar problems. They spit lead, sometimes jam up. I think it might be timing problems, but I don't know. I like shooting revolvers, but I'm no good at fixing them.

What are some good reputable revolver gunsmiths out there that I could send these to and get them fixed up so they are reliable shooters again?

I never shoot them any more. They have just sat in my safe for years. It's a shame because they are cool older guns. One is a 1978 and I think the other is from the mid 50's. They are not the fanciest or most valuable revolvers out there, but I like them and would like to preserve them.

The biggest problem is getting it to them after the new policy changes with FedEx and ups.

I hear that Cylinder & Slide is actually not folding. They have long been my revolver go-to.

If your older 28 is a “pre” model number Smith & Wesson won’t touch it anymore.  I believe anything with a stamped model they will still fix.  I’ve had to send a 624 with push off issues and a 66-1 with a seriously thinned out forcing cone to them.  They did great work on both.  I had a spare barrel for the 66 though as Smith is seriously short on older parts.

I’ve currently got my refinished “pre” 27 3.5” at a local smith.  I think it just needs a new hand.  Roy knows what he’s doing so we’ll see……

Oh yeah. I always forget that they do gunsmith work out of warranty.

Both of these are stamped. IIRC one is a 28-1 and the other is a 28-3.

I would prefer an independent gunsmith if I can. I've had to send a few S&Ws back to the mothership for warranty work and it was an OK/satisfactory experience, but not great.

That's good to hear. I thought they were already gone.

Yeah, for sure. I'm going to have to use a 3rd party service like ShipMyGun.com

Of course, he will try strongly to talk you into the full action job, which likely encompass the repair/s
that may be needed.

I'd have to say this. Communications is not a strong suit.

Alex Hamilton has to be in his mid-80s by now.
