This ammo is new to me and I’m looking for something other than Critcal Defense to run for home defense.

Federal HST looks like a great choice for SD ammo from what I’ve read, but what about for HD when I don’t necessarily want better barrier penetration?

Thanks for any help!

Good ammo that just got more expensive for the average Joe to get.

That shouldn't dissuade you- just know it may be costly to stack deep.

Local Deputies use it.

I use HST in all the things. .38, .45, 9mm, .40.

I use the 147gr HST in my house pistol...but mostly because it is suppressed. Otherwise 124gr is GTG.

Hst, gold dot and ranger t are all top quality hollow points. I would use any of them for home defense.

I don’t like what I have seen from hornady offerings. Critical duty always seems to have an issue penetrating to fbi standards.

HST is a top choice in 9mm.

Any round that could cause lethal injuries can cause lethal injuries after going through a wall. You’re splitting hairs at this point, hoping your wife or child isn’t killed by an errant bullet due to 1/4” less expansion isn’t where I’d be spending my efforts.

I keep 124 HST in my G19.

Barrier penetration is especially important in a home.

A home is a barrier rich environment. An assailant can take cover and shoot back at you behind a couch, a wall unit, a corner of a wall, a coffee table, a center island, ect. A shot isn't always going to present itself with the assailant producing his chest right in front of you all the time.

You should never choose a load that's designed not to penetrate these barriers. Usually loads like that have trouble reaching vitals. Birdshot and Glazer Safety Slugs are the worse offenders.

Great points, everyone...guess I’ll be picking up some 124gr HST while the Federal rebate is going on!

My pistol is loaded with 124 HST, it’s hard to beat.

Anyone got a good place to snag it at?

Same Here.  HST is consistently "Good Stuff"...

124 gr +P HST is our duty load.

It's good stuff.

Sweet!  Now to find a decent price on it...hmm.

I see that a Federal is having a $5 back/box rebate with minimum of 2 boxes.  Is $1/rd about what I should be looking for after rebate?

Also, I’ve got Winchester NATO 124gr for the range.  Will the HST 124gr (non +P) stuff be close enough in velocity to the Win NATO for it to be good range ammo for the HST?

I use them in my pistol.

I stick to 5.56 for HD though.

More like less than 50cents. A 50 round box should be under 25$ shipped.

Not anymore. With MAP being enforced, expect to pay a little under $30 for a 50rd box.

Yes, a .50 BMG is the only answer.  An invader may try to hide behind your safe......................

For some reason I thought it was a 20 round box like the Critical Defenses!

Hmm...I thought over penetration for HD was one of the things people took in to consideration when choosing a round?

Only if you buy at walmart. The smart people buy the 50 round boxes online.

Finally figured out why I was seeing the 20 rd boxes and not the 50’s.  The 20 rounders are the “Personal Defense” brand of HST that are part of the $5 rebate/box, and they are $25/box...the “Tactical” is the 50 round box and is around $30/box but is not part of the rebate.

Only if you're a LEO.  It used to be even cheaper. (for us civilians and LEO's)  Vista's getting greedy.
