I’m considering purchasing some VZ grips for a 642. I’ve used stock Smith & Wesson grips, crimson trace, and uncle mikes grips on various j frame revolvers. I honestly liked the crimson trace grips the best even without using the laser. They had a soft rubber or neoprene wrap around grip that covered the back strap and made shooting such a small revolver much nicer than it should have been.
I’m thinking about trying some VZ wrap around twister grips. Anyone care to share their preferences? I’m not opposed to classic grips and a Tyler T-grip if that gets me the best groups and most comfortable shooting experience. |

Hogue tamer grips got my 442 to point much better for me than the factory grips and lessened the impact of +P loads.

If it's riding on my hip in an OWB holster, Hogue. If it's tucked in my pocket in a Sticky holster, boot grips. Although for OWB, I just picked up a Smith12-2 with Tyler's grip on it and kinda like it. Thats a K frame though, sorry. Still....

I’m also watching this similar thread, and leaning toward Altamont wood for my 442. |

I put a Hogue on my 640 , I like the way it fills out the hand but you can’t use a speed loader, it hits the grip so I use the bianchi speed strips instead

Oddly enough, the now discontinued Taurus small-frame grip. On the RH side of each photo.
You need only to punch out the grip locator pin from the base of your J-frame. They are quite secure, no worries. ![]() |

LG405 for comfort and laser needs.
PGS Hideout grips for if you're going to pocket carry and need minimal size. If you've no need for a laser, I'm a fan of a Barami Hip Grip plus Tyler T adapter plus rubber bands. Great feeling combo |

Have PGS in the parts bin and 405s on the 642 in my pocket. I’d like to try the hip grip. Have you seen the new hip grips out yet? Hamreforge on IG. They look promising. |

I have a set of Uncle Mike's boot grips I picked up from eBay a couple years ago. Figured I'd likely buy a J-Frame sooner or later, and since they ain't exactly getting any more common, might as well grab a set for cheap while I can. They look just right on a stainless snub.
Now I just need to get a J-frame to put them on. ![]() |

I use the factory grips on mine so I can continue to pocket carry or aiwb. I did take a dremel to the side of it to allow speed loaders to work better. No issues now

I have two 642’s. One has the hogue tamers, I use this mostly for range use on owb holster carry. The other has VZ boot grips that I use for pocket carry. The hogues really make the 642 more pleasurable to shoot but the VZ’s work perfect for me for pocket carry.

The regular full finger hogue has been my go to on nearly every gun except an AR. For the J frame I think they excel. The oem rubber grips are also good as far as I’m concerned. Specifically the one about the same size as the full grip hogue. Still prefer the hogue though.
