Ok you guys helped me out with a 629-4 I recently picked up so now I want a nice revolver with a blued finished.  I am talking about that creamy smooth, deep blued finish that older smith and wessons have.

Guess I want to go .357 but not really opposed to .38.  So, what variant should I look out for. 19 dash something, 586, 27?  Please narrow down to specific version. Still learning the difference between variants but there is a lot to learn.

Looking at 19-3's but open to whatever. Just want a nice example of smith and wesson's finest with a nice deep blued finish.

Colt pythons are out of my budget but I sure like they bluing they produced as well as Korth.

If there is something else I should consider, please let me know.

If you can go with 38 special I would suggest looking at pre model 10’s. I recently got this one off GB for about $425 with shipping and transfer fees. Beautiful blued finish and the lockup is tighter than my other 4 stainless steel smiths.

You simply can't go wrong with an early 19.  In my opinion they are a near equal to the python in most aspects and exceed the python in others.

And yes, I have owned and fired both.

I love 19s, but for me it would be a 5" 27.

I would suggest a Model 10 as a cheap way to satisfy your BRD (Blue Revolver Disease,) but I tried that and only a week later decided I still needed a Model 19

S&W model 27.

If you're cheap [like me], buy a older model 28.

If you want something smaller, a older  K-38 model 14 or 15 Masterpiece is the way to go.

mod 28.

Models 14 or 18 in a 8" bbl are fun to shoot. As mentioned, Models 19 & 27 are terrific as well.

For a Model 10, I believe  I would prefer a heavy barrel version due to better accuracy.

Or, for something not common, a Model 34.

While some can be nice, guns as recent as the 586 do not have the same level of blue finish generally as older Smith’s. To me the “golden era “ of S&W bluing was 1947-1970’s. While a 27 from that era would have been the companies premium revolver, even lowly model 10’s seemed to be carefully finished as well. I tend to like K frames more than N’s but any frame size you like from that era would be my choice

Out of my blued Smiths, the 27-2 is the best (far right).

S&W did a lot of matte blue.  The 50s/60s magnums (27/57/29) have terrific bluing.

My 19-5 is decent.  Most of my revolvers are pretty ugly.

I'd look for a model 27.

It's a blued N Frame in .357 Magnum. You can shoot the dumbest .357 loads you find and it'll be fine.

This is what I want. Preferably a 4" no dash to compliment my 4" 686 no dash. With some nice wood grips.

Thanks for the replies.  Some really great examples of what I am looking for.  The problem is I am not able to find any locally and gunbroker seems to be on the extreme high side in regards to all these recommendations.

This may be a little harder and take a little longer to procure than I had hoped.

Cruise your local guns and pawn shops.  It may take a while, but if you keep at it you can come across some good deals.  I picked up a blued Mod 36 earlier this summer for $250 by doing just that.  You just gotta be at the right place at the right time.

Model 28's are nice and all that, but they don't have the deep, polished blue finish that Model 19's or 27's have. 586's are cool, but IMO, if you want that liquid blue look try to find a 19-3 or earlier or a 27-2 or earlier.

Model 19-2

Right, that seems to be the norm in any search for an older S&W these days.
Settle in for the long haul and check everywhere frequently.

Heed this excellent advice and don't get fixed on just one model and you will find a deal eventually. Since you like your N frame model 29, a model 27-2 would nicely complement it, the M28 is the more frugal version that lacks the nice bluing that you want.

So what would be ball park price on a 27-2.  Seems to be pushing $1500 for a perfect example and between 800-1000 for less than perfect.

Early 50ties pre model 27 357 magnums have a high polish finish.   You can also have a handgun refinished in high polish.

What a beautiful set of revo's you have there... Especially that mirror blue 27-2! You have good taste sir!

OP, I was going to suggest a vintage model 29 since you just got your first 629... Why not stay with the venerable .44 caliber? I shoot .44Specials 70% of the time out of my newest & now favorite revolver, a 629-6. I'm about to resolve the Hillary Hole out of this baby tonight with a titanium plug delete from Original Precision. Don't get me wrong, I love my .38Specials... have half a dozen of them... But I only have them in "snubbie" configuration. I've just never shot the .357Magnum cartridge well; in fact, it's THE only pistol caliber I just never got the knack of so I leave the .357's to those that can shoot them. .44Special/Magnum is the best "Magnum" in my opinion. If I could only find a 3" barreled vintage Model 29 I think my collection would be complete. But I don't even know if they made one with a 3" barrel; If they did it would be well north of 2K in 90% or better condition.

So I picked up a 5" 27-2 that is exactly what I was looking for.  The finish is perfect.  Timing, Lockup and Trigger are on point.  One very concerning issue.  It was not noticeable in any of the pictures but looking at them now I guess I can tell only because I have it in person.

What in the blue fuck was done to the forcing cone. I am aware of the 11 degree cut but surely this isn't it.  Did someone run a dremel on this shit?  Is this because the cylinder gap is out of spec therefore modified to prevent hangup?  I don't have gauges to check.  There doesn't seem to be anything apparent of not functioning correctly and the gap seems consistent across all cylinders.

I have a 4" 28-2 that has a similar cut (chamfer?) but the thin factory round machining cuts perpendicular to the barrel are the same all the way to the end of the forcing cone unlike yours which are cut parallel to the barrel. Sooooo....not sure doolyd. The cuts on my 28-2 are all factory blued too, are yours in the raw? I wouldn't lose any sleep as long as it shoots good. Wouldn't a smith have to unpin and remove the barrel to make those cuts if they extend all the way to the top strap? Can't tell if they are from the pic.
