Who makes the best 9mm 1911 magazines that are relatively flush fit?
It seems the 10rd mags protrude quite a bit from the magwell.

So for a flush fit (Bobbed Frame) 9rds seem to be the only option.

Mecgar vs. Metalform?

Any others?

Thanks

I've been pretty happy with my flush mags that came with my DW's.  9rd 38 super and 7rd 45acp officer mags.  Not sure who makes them for dw.

According to Keith Lawton from DW, They use Metalform for 1911.

Best flush fit... Metaform.

Best 10rd... Wilson ETM (metal follower).

I've had good luck with Checkmate flush fit mags, but I haven't ran them as hard as I have the Metalforms, so Metalform gets my vote.

I've been using the Mec-Gars and I have to say, I really like them. I used a Metalform once, and sent it right back to Brownells. IMHO, the thing was a piece of junk.

When I had my RIA 9mm 1911 I ran Checkmates, zero issues. cheap.

Metalforms are the only 1911 .45 mags I’ve bought that didn’t run 100% in all my 1911s.

9 round Metalform with the front ramp.   They're commonly referred to as Rob Leatham or Springfield mags.

Buy 'em from Greg Coté.

I've got Wilson 47D's, Metalforms, old Pachmyers and Randalls, plus maybe some more brands I can't remember.  All the non Wilson's have been converted to 8 round capacity with Wilson internals.  All have worked well for me.

Ooops!  Had a brain fart.  Was thinking .45 mags somehow.

Should have read this before I just got some (mec-gar)
Just ordered a rock island tact II. I don't have it yet, guess I'll find out.
Most of the people I see at our matches with them are using Wilson or Chip McCormick.

If they don't work great I'll just have them for range mags.

Wilsons run fine in my STI and Les Baer, but not my Springfield.

Metalforms run great in all of my guns. I like the ones with removable base plates.

Is there a concensus about Wilson v CMC?   I get the impression that it varies from pistol to pistol.

I bought some Brownells mags for my Armscor and they work great. Haven’t tried them in anything else.

Correct that’s the crappy part.

MecGar or Checkmates

If you want to practice random malfunction drills get some 38 super mags. ( If someone tells you that you can use 38 Super mags in 9mm...yes you can, But work and work well are two different things. )

Oh well.  When the time comes I’ll get a few of each and hope for the best.

Has anyone here tried Tripp’s 9mm mags?  I’m using their 10mm mags and they are performing great.

Hmmm...

After buying some Wilson ETMs and Metalform (Springfield style) magazines, I noticed that the Wilsons contact the ejector when inserted.  I understand this is bad and should modify the ejector or return the mags, correct?

The factory Checkmate and Metalform magazines clear the ejector.

That is correct.  If you don't modify the ejector you may bend it or break it eventually.  It only takes a couple passes of a small file to get the clearance you need.  Just go slow and keep checking.  You don't need a ton of clearance either.

I have a ton of Mecgars I bought cheap [$7 apiece] from a vendor retiring, they work great. I found that metalform followers are VERY brittle and will snap if you try to tweak them in any way.

You have to use two pairs of pliers or something to hold the follower when you bend it.   They're hardened and not supposed to bend.

I've tuned a few MF 9mm followers with no problem.

+2 for the Tripp. Not a problem in several pistols.

I tried a CMC mag and it fits with no modification to the ejector so the Wilsons are going back.  Too bad, they seem well made otherwise.

I'd fix the ejector.  Riding high makes 'em feed better.

Wilson Combat has a new 9rd mag that's flush fit in a Government frame. It might be a good choice for those wanting to keep the frame as short as possible for concealing.

The Brownells magazines look just like the CMCs.  Are they rebadged CMCs?

I don’t know who makes them but they run well in my Armscor

A set of Brownells magazines arrived and after directly comparing them, I have a high degree of certainty that they are rebadged CMC magazines.

Pretty sure CMC never made mags, so you're probably right.

The new Wilson flush 9 rounders are rebranded CMCs. They're working well for me so far.

Good question. I like them so far, and I am going to see how well the run in my Colt and NH tomorrow.

Cant beat the price.

That’s why I bought them. Think the 3 packs are on sale for $60 so if they dropped a coupon it would be a hell of a deal.

Whatever mags run best in “your” gun are the best mags you can buy.

I’ve seen guns choke on Wilson mags and others only run on Wilson mags. Among other name brands.

9mm can be finicky. Mine runs on metal form mags so haven’t bothered to try anything different. FYI they suck if you have to empty the mag by hand. For a downloaded stage at a match for example.

Based on recommendations I bought two ramped Metalform magazines and they run great with ball but choke on HST, in my 1911 that is.   Others feed HST just fine.

Weird ain’t it?

I just ran the Brownells black 9mm mags in both my Colt CCU and Nighthawk Chairman.

Flawless.

I will be buying more.
