What should I be looking at? It's just going to be used as a range toy and to add a 1911 to the collection.

RIA.  I don't know how they do it but they just plain work.  Excellent customer service in the unlikely event you need it.

springfield armory if you want any of the modern bits, RIA/Armscore if you want like GI sights and shit. I would vote for a 9mm if that's the only caliber you shoot, but full disclosure I'm a full power 45 1911 kind of guy myself.

Really depends on your budget. I've got a RIA in 22TCM/9mm that's a ball to shoot and I got it for $400. Got a Ruger SR1911 in .45 that runs fine that cost me $500. Picked up a Colt Competition in .45, paid $850. Last 1911 I bought was the SA Operator in .45. I'm in it a little over $900. There is a difference in feel and quality as you go up in price, but every one of them has gone bang when I pulled the trigger.

That's just where they start. RIA offers all the bells and whistles like beavertails, sights, triggers, rails, etc. too.

My son has a couple of RIA's that run great. My RIA .38 Super runs perfectly.

I've had a RIA GI for several years and its never missed a beat.

Next up the price chain would be Ruger.  More features with a modest price increase,  with smart shopping.

Up from that would be the Springfield and Colt entry level guns.  Quality guns with good features but double or so the price of the RIA.

I'm going against the grain here and say my pick is the Taurus 1911. Now before you go all crazy I bought this out of a whim one day when I went to get a Colt Delta. I don't know what it is but the duo tone 1911 looks pretty cool and I had to get it along with the Colt. The main thing I like is that it doesn't have the huge Taurus printed on the side of the slide.

Only problem with it is the rough trigger on it. I mean it is rough and very inconsistent reset and trigger pull. It also scratches like crazy. The barrel also feels paper thin and very light but it seems to hold up very well.

Rock Island and Ruger both offer fantastic values with my nod going to Ruger.  I have zero complaints with either for their price points.

I sell RIA and ATI at my store. Both are great guns. I sell the ATI Commander for $359.99. Its a lot of gun for the $$$. Wish they dovetailed the front sight. Sights and grips are it's only down falls. Mahogany grips are too thick and sights too thin (GI).  If ATI/RIA (made in same plant?) Had decent sights they would kick ass. As it is you need to mill the slide on most of them.

ETA. Those Phillipino gunsmith got 1911 lock work down pat. I will put an ATI/RIA trigger up against any Colt, Ruger or SA gun 2-3 times the price.

They're not made in the same plant. RIA is armscor and ati is shooters arms manufacturing, aka SAM. The third manufacturer over there that I'm aware of is metro arms corporation, aka Mac. They are sold as American classic.
I've looked at ATIs and they have bigger sights than real GI sights. The front sight is wider and the notch in the rear is wider. RIAs GI model has tiny GI sights. I don't know if ATI used real GI narrow tenon front or GI rear cut, but I have found a couple of good sights that replace GI sights. One is MGW from Brownells and the other is from a seller on eBay called whitetail1911. They look like GI sights but are bigger and blockier and white dot.

Buy a used but unmodified Springfield Loaded in 45acp...  I have had about a dozen 1911's and have not come across a SA Loaded that was a dud yet. I have a few pistols worth a LOT more but SA seemed to have cracked the code for cost effective reliability... after some time with the gun I'd trust it for defense.

Two big reasons for the SA Loaded...

1. Your resale will be much better than with a RIA (and I have had 2 and they were good guns).

2. If you decide to modify and build the gun up or send it to a smith, the SA's are a great starting point for a build.

I think you can get a used Loaded for $600 most days if you search around for a clean used one.

I was going to get a Magnum Research Stainless 5" .45 as it was the cheapest with a checkered front strap.  I hesitated because its owned by Kahr and because of the Moonies.  I later found a used .45 Colt Competition Stainless that a guy had the front strap checkered.

What did the Moonies ever do to you?

Their 1911’s are sweet. Made in Israel right?

Op, I read a lot of good things about Remington’s and their around $500ish.

You said 'range toy' AND for 'collection.' There's nothing wrong with that, but right now the only 'collectable' 1911s come with The Pony on them (i.e., a Colt).

Everything else is a non-collectable/marginally-collectable clone.

For a pure range toy that's reliable and reasonably priced, the RIAs, as mentioned, and the base G.I. model from Springer would get the nod.

If buying new and you want affordable, buy an RIA.

If willing to buy used, keep an eye on the EE here, as lots of higher end SA and even Colt guns come up at affordable prices from someone who just isn't a 1911 person or who upgraded to something even higher cost/quality.

My 1911 stable has 3 Colts, a Kimber, 2 SA's, 1 Para, 2 RIA, and a Sig (Which is currently my favorite to carry and shoot).

This. I bought mine (first 1911) last year and haven't had any issues. At the time I was finding them in the  mid to low $500 range all day long in a parkerized finish.

Figure about $100-$120 more to step to a loaded, which gets you things like the extended beavertail, better sights, etc.

one more time

1911 is like an AR, it's a lego, old design, no voodoo magic to it.  Unless you are going to spend upwards of 1k, not much difference on the lower end of the spectrum.  Look at the various 1911 boards and read reviews.  If you are buying anything other than the taurus under 800-1k, you are wasting your money:)

now over the 1k mark, it's another world of 1911s but not necessarily more reliable

New entry grade Colts run low to mid $700 range. If you ever sell or trade, I will be honest with you, I have never lost money on a Colt.
I've owned a few RIAs, good guns. Had a Taurus that was a decent gun, needed some work, minor stuff, ambi safety fell off first range trip, lol.
My point is the Colt is a solid gun, but also a solid investment. You won't regret shopping around and spending a few hundred more. Check Colt prices on Buds and grab a gun and compare to ria, etc. You may be surprised.

Edit to add, Grab a Gun is a online FFL dealer.

Yes, a Colt will retain its value for your life time. Most likely it will go up in value if you wait a few years more.

I always had a hard time trying to sell my firearms. I did it a few times long ago and honestly I regret it everyday that I did. I once traded in a really nice Sig pistol for another pistol. While I was happy with my traded pistol, I regretted it for years until I just went out to buy the same model Sig again. I promised I would never do that again.

I've had a Remington R1 for 6-7 years now.

I just picked up an ATI commander size .45 and now I have to agree with you. $350 and it is more accurate than most of my 5" 1911s. Ran a bore snake through it and shot 150 rounds through 4 random mags I had and zero malfunctions. I'm sold on ATIs now.
