Wowzers! That's a beautiful beast! My favorite single action caliber and platform. You took my favorites, .45 Colt and Ruger Bisley, and made it even better.
Happy birthday and well done. |

Have you shot it with those ridiculous 700 grain lincoln logs? I really kicked this decision around. I mean I could have just bought a "factory" gun and saved some money. Or spent a little more and gotten a Freedom Arms gun. In the end, I wanted something unique, not something off the shelf. |

Quoted: Nothing wrong with doing your own thing. No 700gr slugs for me. The sweet spot for the JRH is 440gr@1350fps. To get above that weight you need to ream the brass which I have neither the tools or inclination to try. In its current form it is capable of taking down anything on the planet, with one exception, and I don't ever see myself hunting an elephant. https://i.imgur.com/zlqymnIl.jpg?1 View Quote That's beautiful. I watch that silly guy on Demolition Ranch shoot his BFR with a very short barrel. It looks painful. I just ordered some 250 grain Speer Deep Curls. For Ohio deer, you don't really need the heavier, hardcast bullets, so I might as well send a hollow point screaming. You can get them to 1450 fps at standard Blackhawk pressures, so I should be able to get them to close to 1600 out of this gun, with H110. I also ordered a bunch of coated 255 grain SWC's to work up some "heavy plinking" loads at 1100 fps. I have 8 pounds each of Unique and 2400 to play with. |

I could buy 500 S&W brass and ,500 bullets anywhere. Order a bunch of brass from Starline and then bullets from either Matts Bullets or Beartooth and you should have both sides covered. Even in the current panic, less mainstream calibers like 480R, 475L, 41mag, etc. always have components available. You are not likely to ever find much selection in a brick and mortar store but online components are plentiful. When I bought my 480 SRH I bought 500 pieces of brass from Starline. I still have most of that still around. 480R is relatively easy on brass and as long as you don't go crazy belling the case mouth it should last at least 8 loadings. Now I would never try to dissuade someone from buying a new gun, and a 500 JRH is a hoot to shoot, but 480R reloading components are not even remotely in short supply. |

Loaded up some ammo to test with the 250 grain Deepcurl. 26.0, 26.5 and 27.0 grains of H-110. 26.5 is the max for a standard Blackhawk. I'm here to tell you, 27 grains of H-110 is a LOT of powder.
Thats pretty neat. Id have to try that bullet against barriers and water to see how tough it is. Maybe the nosler partitions if they dont?
I'm up to 1450 fps with 27.0 grains of H-110 with the 250 grain DeepCurls. Cases are falling out of the chambers, primers looking normal. I'm going to load a few at 27.5 and 28.0 grains to see what happens. The Hodgdon data for a standard Blackhawk tops out at 26.5 for a 250 grain XTP. Hodgdon told me I can use the same data for the Speer bullet.
I'm also going to load up some 300 grain XTP's that I have laying around, to see how they do. The plinking / practice load with 255 Keith bullets over 18.0 grains of 2400 gets about 1175 fps, and is relatively pleasant, compared to the roar of the H-110 loads. I'll be using this to get used to the gun, plinking at bowling pins from various positions. One thing that I "always knew" but is becoming readily apparent, is that the way you hold the gun on these blasters has a substantial effect on point of impact. I'm trying slightly different variations on grip, etc., especially relative to how I'm likely to get a shot up in a tree stand. My best case scenario would be with my forearms or upper arms resting on my treestand "gun rest". |
Good to know some load data for those Deep Curls, I've got 500 of them sitting on the shelf I bought to load in my 16" Rossi 92. From Paco Kelly's testing the 92's are safe up to 50K PSI and beyond if you're crazy enough but I think 40K should be more than plenty.
Those H110 loads should be cookin' out of a 16" barrel. Probably stomp the shooter worse than what you're shooting at out of a sub 5lb rifle with a steel buttplate though... |

Looks great. One word of caution with those 250gr Gold Dot (aka Deep Curl) bullets, they're not that tough of a bullet. Generally with Speer, the deeper the hollow cavity, the less velocity they will handle. I've shot my fair share of 250gr Deep Curls but they're really only going to hold together at about 1100 fps max. At the velocities you're getting, I'd suggest something more stout, a 250gr XTP at minimum or as you mentioned, A-frames.

These look like they would go off like a grenade, as long as it's a broadside shot and I don't have to break the shoulder. We'll see how these A-Frames work. I also have 300 grain XTPs. |
OP that revolver turned out really nice.
I'm curious to hear how the A frames work out. I've been mildly interested in the 280 gr. A frame for .44 mag, but find little real world results. It seems like it could be a very good bullet for hi vel 45 Colt for sure. I'll get some of them when I've used up what I have. I'm wondering how XTP's function at high end 45 velocities??? On large deer & elk size game. |
Beautiful gun.
The 240gr XTP is designed for higher velocities if it proves too much for the 250. There is also a magnum and non-magnum version of the 300gr XTP. It's a subtle product line differentiation ("XTP" vs "XTP Mag"). The regular 300gr XTP has two cannelure grooves, and the XTP Mag has one. |

And this project comes to a close for the year. The gun and bullet (265 grain A-Frame over 27.0 grains of H110, at 1450 fps) did everything it was supposed to. This little buck came in right at sundown. I think it saw me pulling my gun out of my coat (it was snowing hard, and I didn't want the gun covered with snow and freezing up), so it kept eyeballing me. Finally, it put it's head down and came in, quartering at about 25 yards. It wasn't a perfect shot, as it was getting dark quick, and it didn't move into a position where I could use the crossbar rest of my tree stand.
The bullet broke the left shoulder, wrecked one lung, clipped the other one and took out the liver. It skimmed across the heart muscle, but didn't perforate it, so it went 100 - 150 yards, before going down and staying down. I didn't find the bullet, but there was no exit hole. It was probably somewhere in the guts, but when you're gutting a deer in the dark, when it's snowing, it's tough to do things like that well. All in all, not a horrible shot for 25 yards, iron sights, 50 year old eyes, no rest, at sundown, but it could have been slightly better. Without hitting the heart, it was able to go in the WORST direction, making it's recovery and drag home pretty crappy. It was probably a good idea not to use the 250 grain Deep Curl hollow point. No telling what would have happened to that bullet after hitting the shoulder. Next, I think I'm going to try some big and heavy hardcast hollowpoints. I'm liking this 325 grain gas-checked, hollow point. It seems like, even if it doesn't expand, it would give a wicked wound channel with that big meplat. If it expands violently, and the front part peels away, there is still 250 grains or so of lead, to keep on penetrating. I think I could hit 1350 fps without getting excessive pressures. |
