I admit I know jack shit when it comes to 1911 pistols. Had a guy offer this pistol for trade on a golf cart i have for sale ($4500) He claims its a special edition 1 of 222 made with gold trigger and and gold buckmark inlay in grips.

What do the experts here have to say would be a fair value on this pistol? Im waiting on him to send me serial numbers for validation on MFG date and any special edition claims.

They made a bunch of them.

Looks like the trigger has seen better days.  I'd say its worth $700 at most.

It's a Silver Chrome Hi Power.  Made until 2000.  I think they started production in late 80's.

These aren’t 1911’s OP. It blow my mind if it’s worth $2k let alone double that. I’d do a bit of searching if you want to try and work it out but in my opinion people who have stuff like that are rarely willing to come back down to earth. They most likely paid that much or gave that much in trade for it.

In NIB condition they sold for $1k.  That was just several years ago.  I doubt they quadrupled in price in 3 years.  They're not rare at all and certainly not a "special edition" in the conventional sense.

ETA:  They made north of 15,000 of them based on what I could google in 30 seconds.  Far cry from 222 the trader told OP.

OP, the owner of the pistol is trying to pull a fast one on you.  There's nothing special about the pistol.

They didn’t come in plastic boxes in 1968 either

Most local gun stores will give appraisals for a small fee. That way he gets the bad news from a third party. My guess would be in the $1,000 range. Gun broker has one that looks like it’s in better shape than that one that they’re asking $1800 for, but it has zero bids. Great guns, but not worth $4,000.

...and they started stamping “Assembled in Portugal” on them in 1988, so, yeah, his dating is a bit off.

Tell him you'll take $4k plus the pistol.

I'd tell him $5k and the pistol. Since he tried to rip off the OP.

I have that exact model, the one he is talking about is the Renaissance version, which is engraved from the factory and would cost around eight thousand to make today. There was a set with a Baby, the 380 and the Hi Power. All engraved in silver chrome with the gold triggers and pearl like grips.

I had one back in about 2000.  I didn't like the trigger so I traded it in.  Now I have a FEG hi power that's a pretty blue.  I think that the Browning hi powers are over priced.  I would agree that it's worth about $700ish.

The Silver Chrome (model) featured a silver-chrome frame and slide, and Pachmayr rubber grips. The magazines for the silver chrome BHP had a dull finish and a black rubber Pachmayr basepad.

Did the seller tell you it was a 1911? I find it suspicious if the current owner called it a 1911. When I see somebody in possession of something like that with that little knowledge I think they probably stole it.

I'm not an expert on hi powers, but I keep a pretty close eye on firearms in general. I'm not going say what I think it's worth, but I tend to agree with what everybody else has said. Sometimes a gun is worth more to you just to get an off the records face to face gun. If you think you are going to flip it then you need to look long and hard at how much they are selling for.

Btw, I remember back in about the '90s browning put good * gold triggers in a lot of their guns, rifles, shotguns, etc. I don't think it was a big deal, it was kind of brownings thing. Again, I'm no expert, but I remember that. A friend of mine had a bolt action rifle with a good * gold trigger, he thought it was special also.

* F'ing auto correct!

$1500 on a good day and Covid-adjusted for panic pricing.

Local shop has a two-tone like that in the case that has been sitting there used for some time at $1100.
